120,000 was for two shifts, once you start getting over 300 cars a day, you need either 10 hour shift or two shifts.
A lot of that capacity was built in when Ford used to make taxis and bulk orders to government fleets.
That was back in the days of 30-40% fleet discounts....

Looks like someone opened the Territory drawings in AutoCAD and shrunk to 65% and clicked save, I like it. Showed the wife, she said it looks like a Rav 4, I told her it would be close to the same size, she loves it.

I have to go against the majority here. I am not a fan. Dont really like it.

It will still sell big numbers I think. People love small suvs these days.

Go-Auto has now completely backflipped on the previous report - the EcoSport has NO input from Australia at all other than intial target market conversations.

This thing is FWD only - no AWD. WTF? That's just dumb.

Australia unlikely to get it until LATE 2013 - it's at least 18 months away. Complete engine line up not yet confirmed.

Ive never heard of it being anything other than a single shift. They had the line rate at over 500 for BA by getting the individual assembly rate down to something like 51s a car from something like 58s.

I noticed that too. At first they said Australian designed, but now they are saying designed and engineered in Brazil.

Its on the Fiesta platform, it will compete with sub compact SUV's like Mitsu ASX, Suzuki SX4 etc. They are saying roughly 25k.

Kuga is bigger and on the Focus platform.

As a concept it's a step in the right direction for Ford. The reality undoubtedly needs to be much better. Personally, I'm not a fan of double clutch gearboxes as I find them jerky and clunky in stop/start traffic, and hesitant in slow moving traffic. My own opinion would be to use a conventional automatic gearbox for a number of reasons.

I'm not sold on the drivetrains either. A 1L turbo petrol might be okay, but a 1.5L NA petrol and 1.5L diesel seem a bit anemic if I'm being honest. Ford have a 1.6L Ecoboost and a 2L diesel they could use. Just my opinion, but I think they'd be better served to use these engines instead. I mean, I know they are using the smaller engines for fuel economy and emissions targets, but come on. Also, no AWD option could hurt them as ASX/SX4 both have this option.

Thank goodness it's only 95% market ready. Hopefully they can make it less ugly.

Territory's face while pretty... all smashed in is not.

This is a sub compact car, most if not all of these size cars run tiny engines. Rare to have 2 litre engines in them, the Fiesta doesn't have a 2 litre.

I'd say keeping FWD isn't a problem, there's no way one of these would ever hit the trails, they are for the suburbs these things. But they did say AWD was possible if the demand is there.

The Suzuki SX4, Mitsubishi ASX and Nissan Dualis all use 2L petrol engines, with the ASX also using a 1.8L diesel engine. I'm not sure on exact measurements of the Ecosport, but comparing Fiesta dimensions to SX4/ASX/Dualis, they're quite close, so you could assume the weights will be similar. The little 1L engine could be a good thing, but on the higher spec models, when weight gets up around 1400kgs, it will struggle off boost. Also, the 1.5L diesel, in a 1300+kg car (assuming it's this heavy judging by competetitors) IMO, is not big enough.

The competition all have AWD options. Mitsubishi do an AWD 1.8L diesel that returns 5.9L/100km and has the AWD system from the Evo. You can buy an ASX FWD petrol CVT (shudder) for $25k. Seems like puss to you an I, but they sell a lot of them.

I just think Ford need to think about the Australian buying public a lot, which I'm sure they are, before they settle on engine variants for Australia. Additionally, it needs to be cheap to compete in this segment.

Ecosport FWD with Ecoboost 1.0 has 90 Kw and 170 nm so it will go great and give diesel like economy,
look for around 5 l/100 km and significantly less price for Ecoboost option compared to competitor diesels.

Most of these subcompact SUVs are really little urban SUVs that do no off road work
so for the majority of them, FWD is OK and wil suit the needs of the majority of buyers...

If ya don't like it, don't buy it

I agree with you, it looks like a great engine and should be a good car for Ford in that segment. The difference between small turbo petrol engines and small turbo diesel engines, is that small turbo petrol engines will drink a bit more when pushed. Diesel's always seem to stay frugal regardless.

It'll be interesting to see how this little fella goes in our local market. I think it's the right car for Australia as we all look to move into smaller, more economical cars. It's just a pity it's going to take so long to come here.

Its not really up to FoA what engines it gets, the countries it will be sold in would put economy above power, so they will go for the most economical engines they can get. The good thing is that the engines available from Fiesta, which will also get the 3 cylinder Ecoboost soon, are very economical and make good power too.

I don't reckon the Ecosport will weigh that much more than a Fiesta, i'd say 1150 to 1250 kg, so 90 kw and 170nm from low in the rev range will be a great little engine for it that will pull it no worries at all. The Ecoboost engines are very strong torque wise from very low in the rev range.

They are saying price will be around 25k, which is basically line ball with the ASX 2WD. The AWD ASX starts from around 32k.

If the Ecosport comes in as you say at around 1150-1250kgs, the 1L Ecoboost will certainly be a good match!

That's a bigger ix35. That design language has been around since about 2008. Hardly stealing anything from Ford.

Look at the way it swoops up the the rear C pillar. It's very Ford Kuga. And that's the older Kinetic design which has been around longer than Hyundais.

Plus that new hundi is bright orange... just like the EcoSport. With a huge octagonal grille. It's very Ford like.

The rear lights of the Santa Fe say it all. Definitely 'inspired' by Ford's Kinetic design language, right down to the wheels, in a similar way to how this

was inspired by this.

Edit: I can see some BMW 'influence' in the front headlights, as well as the D pillar. This would have been the second time that Hyundai blatantly copied BMW (the first being the original i30). You'd think that an amalgam of styling cues from my two favourite car manufacturers would impress me, but it simply doesn't. As well as this, the rear end is a facsimile of an Audi SUV.

Why is it called EcoSport?
Its about as sporty as wearing Mokkies to a hundred metre sprint.
Cute dinky FWD though.
Bit like a Tonka version of the Territory.
