When it comes down to it, this option means ****. As long as his pumps were tested within 3 months and calibrated. Who's to say the container it is pumped into is correct. Just remember temperature of fuel will dictate how much you will fit in your tank. I fill my petrol tanker to 26,000 litres every night before going home. Yet every morning when i recheck the tanks on my truck I've got usually between 50 and 100 litres more as the colder temperatures make petrol expand.

Bp has yearly checks in nsw/act with a tolerance of
+/- 0.3% per 15 litres.
Unless your container, jerry can or whatever is verified
By NMI to be exactly spot on 10/20L etc you have no
Real idea how much you can fill the container really

First of all the pumps are altered and set by Gilbarco, an independant firm to the fuel provider.
Second of all, you should not have an electronic (camera) working whilst near fuel.
Finally, You will need a measuring defice that meets the standards. Sorry stealing out of the kitchen pantry will not do.

You are talking about a 4 liter difference in 70. That is large difference.

I would look at what a 68 litre tank actuially holds, including inlet.
Have you measured it or basing it on Ford stat's?

When I first got my car I ran it to 4KM left on the DTE so I could use premium from there on, it only took me 65l to fill it......

Yes it is important to not have have electronic devices running when you are in a petrol station.

Dangerous things like motor vehicles with lots of sparks and computers should never be used.

The correct method is to remove you battery 500m up the road.
Push your car to the servo
Hand pump the fuel as there cannot be any electricity in the pump.
Make sure it is daylight as no electric lighting is safe.
Then pay cash as the card will require an electric eftpos.
Finally push the car 500m up the road but do not put the batter back in as you now have petrol in the car.

It is easy to demonstrate just how dangerous it is to have electric things in a servo.

Every day there are squillions of news item about a servo exploding, there would have to have been 20 today just in Sydney alone.........

Might be funny to some to make comments about servo's exploding. But fact of the matter is. Static electricity that you cannot see, can contribute to igniting fuel vapor. Simple as that, hence why there are rules that seem silly to most. I am a tanker driver.

Is it true you guys cant use cell phones at all, reason I ask is, a few weeks ago I noticed a BP tanker driver on his cell in the cab, just after having unloaded at a BP, he was still at the servo. This was in NZ

Did not bother saying anything, as I did not want to look like a tell tail dick, but it did have my heckels up

We are able to make calls in the cab with the door shut, but not whilst unloading. And are not allowed to use the phone whilst vehicle is in motion regardless of hands free kit.

Got a call back, said pump was not calibrated correctly. They haven't told me the nitty gritty details but from what i can gather it is just the pump out of calibration from when it was done 7 weeks ago. said pump is out 17% and i will be refunded 17% of my fuel total.

Great result, good on you, and sad to say you only persued it due a very poor reception when you first called the Manager.

Hope you give him a full blast when you get your refund

Myth busters tried to explode fuel vapour at a variety of levels using a mobile phone and couldn't get a result.

So is rubbing a balloon on your head dangerous to do also as that also creates static elec. So where are the warning labels for the little kiddies that are in the servo with their parents?

congrats to the OP on getting money from the station rather than losing it.

Yes but what has static electricity got to do with any of the above?

When microwave ovens first came out a large number of people would not use them because they have radiation like atomic bombs and it will kill you.

All radiation is the same isn't it?

I used to drive the BP fuel tanker at Moorabbin airport and always have to ground the nozzle to the grounding point beside the fuel cap prior to filling the theory being the flow of fuel could generate a charge combined with different potentials.

Plastic containers not put on the ground before filling is probably the most likely time you may get a static spark.
Most other scenarios people generally touch a ground point soon after they get out of the car and discharge the static.
The warning label in the back of our plastic lined utes is genuine :-)

Absolutely. I do the same when I fuel the bugsmasher.

WOW, this went way off topic.

Just went and got my money, it was bitter sweet. He tried to apologise but i wouldn't have a bar of it. I actually told him if his customer service was good i wouldn't be there getting some money back, and he wouldn't be having an enquiry on his shop.

well......sort of a good outcome.........how much was the refund?

I'm guessing $4.20?

but the amount is not the issue, if 100 motorists filled up in one day X 30 day's, well the dollars would add up quickly!

Refund was $19.10 but he gave me a $20 note

It makes me wonder how long it's been out though, he would have made some nice coin out of that bowser.

I find it disturbing that some of you think that static electricity isn't a big issue for us tanker drivers. I also drive for BP. A few weeks back me and another driver were on top of my truck when a burst of static did what we didn't want it to do. It shot my tank dip stick about 80ft in the air. That was dam scary. Glad it didn't go bang. Even if a mobile or other electrical devices has a very minimal chance of blowing stuff, do you really want to take the risk.

good outcome.......I too wonder how long it has been going on and how many "faulty" bowsers are out there!

I say bring back the visible glass pump.......pump up a couple of gallons then release it, want more, simply pump more.
