I’m opposed to enforcement cherry-picking; low range speeding - especially by mobile cameras - is largely this, and would prefer a greater and more social presence of police in the community. If you could get accredited dash cameras and their mounting fitted with a tamper-proof seal by the police or a government agency, it might be useful for prosecution of other behaviours that wind up motorists. Like tailgating.
No 'green slip' here, just the usual TAC charge included in your rego cost, which wasn't included on the price of heavy vehicle registrations on VicRoads website which I think is a bit disingenuous.

In fact my sketchy driving history didn't even count towards the insurance on my truck either because it didn't happen in a commercial vehicle - the insurance company wasn't interested in what I did in a car, they were more concerned about me being new to the industry.

Even though I'm quite aware I drive like a flog, I agree with how they cherry pick which laws they choose to enforce, but that's not just related to speeding, it occurs all the way across Victoria, it was very evident during the lockdown era.

Spend a day in your local magistrates court and watch all the convictions and see how driving offences are treated much harsher than violent crimes like domestic/family violence, rapes and stuff like illicit drug supply offences.

Go google Adrian Bayley if you want to see an interesting example of the legal system taking the **** in Victoria.

Its just because its politically popular to punch down on driving offences in the eyes of the public, I reckon there will be community backlash and the police are going to get a talking to in the Surf Coast community about booking people for driving too slow as it directly contradicts the 'speed kills' messaging thats been going on for decades.

The phone usage thing is interesting, they tell you that its a big distraction and you can't use your phone while driving, however new cars have massive screens in them with things you can fiddle with flat out.

The fines and demerit points are also priced in a way that its not enough to discourage you to use your phone while driving, if they made it four figures and 10 points, its a bit too expensive for the average motorist.

I look at our speeding fines, and 10-24 over carries the same fine, its easily the best value speeding offence in terms of demerit points and fine value, on a clean licence you can get done three times, still keep your licence and all in be under $1500,

If you're going to risk the fine for 10 over, you might as well as do 24 over (excl 110 zones), you're not going to get discretion from Victoria Police anyway on the 10 over.
QLD-Use phone while driving including stopped in traffic and at red light $1161 and 4 demerit points.

The amount of people who can’t or won’t put their phones down while driving is staggering.

…..and it’s damned annoying when they don’t realise the light has turned green..

In peak hour a while back, motorbike copper with head cam, catching tons in stopped traffic,
all he had to do was catch the rear plate, move forward to the drivers door and faces caught.
If he caught one, he caught twenty or more that morning, just about everyone doing it.

4 points and $545 here, they're a bit more serious about it in QLD it seems, but interestingly still only 4 points.

Last time I was driving around Adelaide they had police on motorbikes looking in everyones windows as they were driving along, as well as police on foot in Adelaide CBD at pedestrian crossings and on push bikes looking in your windows as you were cruising around in traffic.

I've never seen that happen around Melbourne.

To be fair, the speedo would have been showing close to 70. Sure, it might be revenue raising, but it is voluntary.

True...thats what I tell them.
It is the lowest reading I have seen, due the reshuffling of brackets etc recently.

But when you get pinged for this and they cant/wont stop the juvenile car theives that the drivers are dodging daily, you wonder where the govts priorities are.

Hence the trains and Olympics comments.

Download Waze and use it. Great way to make sure you don’t inadvertently add to the revenue.
I know this will make some AFF users who don’t understand technology angry. Like that guy from last time I mentioned Waze. Old mate was furious about the scenario he made up in this own head because he didn’t understand it.

I use ye olde GPS on the windscreen job, has the fixed camera warnings and also sometimes the mobile camera warnings too if someone reports it.

Waze seems to work a treat as a lot of people use it and report things.

That’s it. I’ve had camera notifications before and see the speed camera car still setting up. A lot of active users makes sure it’s pretty much always up to date. Not only for speed cameras but hazards on road, stopped vehicles, heavy traffic, road work and all the other things you can report

Think you living a sheltered life or you need to get out more often, in Melbourne our coppers do the same, out on suburban streets and freeways our motorbike cops have a bad habit of lane filtering, peeking in through your windows to see what you up to.

I've only seen about four motorbike cops in the last 12 years on our roads and two of them were a few weeks ago

The real cool story is the one you made up in your head. I appreciate you giving me a role, just don’t try to brand it as non fiction.

I wasn’t going to mention any names, but you volunteered.

Not referring to you but there are loads of people sitting in traffic that don’t look up from their phones when the bike coppers drive past, it’s like shooting fish in a barrel because nothing happens until they get a letter in the post weeks later.

Road safety my butt, be it mobile phones or low level speeding, this is stupid people willing to be taxed over and over….

Up to 10kms over the speed limit the fine is $287 ! More than double the other States.
States run by leftist governments have historically a bad track record of financial mismanagement. Therefore they need to find ways to bleed more money from the people to pay the increased debt.

Like ours, $1B to not build a road and another $380M to not host the Commonwealth Games

If you put that money into actually doing something we'd have roads made out of gold with blokes in suits and fedoras polishing it by hand every 100 meters.

It's a tax on normal human behaviour. Black out your speedo and I bet you (and most of us) would get done time and again. Our cars are safer and more insulated from their surroundings than ever before. If there's nothing to be gained by policing to as little as 3kph over the limit, then why do it?

We used to regularly do the Adelaide/Sydney run over the Hay Plain. Usually over 2 days, but occasionally in 1. Adding 10-15kph to your average speed makes a huge difference. More alert, but more importantly, more likely to finish that day's driving during daylight hours, and dusk is a terribly unsafe time to drive (animals, visibility, circadian rhythm/fatigue).

I don't get the logic behind blacking out your speedo??

As for normal behaviour, I think you'll find in the big scheme of things, those caught speeding are still a minority.

Modern cars are safer, but humans haven't changed. It's the humans that are predictable.

If the govt announced there would be no penalty for exceeding the speed limit, what speed would you drive? There's your answer as to why they don't announce tolerances in most states. Human psychology 101.

Regional default limit should be 130 I reckon instead of 100, especially when you're travelling between capital cities as usually the roads are in fairly good condition.

Because you say its so easy to stay below the limit. I disagree. If you dont prioritise looking at your speedo, its actually very easy to end up over. There's a reason cops love setting up at the bottom of hills.

It's by far and away the single biggest infringement issued. Automatically or in person.
