Another thing, If trucks are speed limited to 100k's, and i would say that as driving is cut throat and time is money, idoubt many drivers would drive under that, wouldn't "booting it to pass" take me over the 110 k limit anyway and therefore be breaking the law ? I've done it plenty of times, I just sit behind them at good distance and then when they indicate I gas it hard to get to overtaking speed, pull out a lilttle have a look, if clear shoot past 'em, give 'em the left-right-left for thanks, see ya later

He gave you the signal that then you were to work out immediately if you were gonna take the chance or not. I am sure most drivers would not give a car the all clear just to be stupid and see an accident happen.. The point to all this is.. if you don't want to overtake then don't.. if you do, say thanks to the truckie afterwards by blinking back.. but don't overtake then slow down to be a pain to him....

I have no problem with getting a signal from a heavy vehicle if the guy in front can see far enough ahead to not put me in a situation i can't get out of. If he couldn't see a bend ahead how the hell was i supposed to know if it was reallty safe? As i said he had a better view than me. |

I'll reinforce the UHF CB advice, if you travel this big land - install one, or at least carry a UHF portable, channel 40 is the primary road channel.
Sometimes one sets it to scan. It is not for heavy vehicle drivers to tell other traffic when to pass, since to do so could lead them to court for claims of contributory negligence should a party have followed their advice/signal and come to grief as a result. Mildly OT - Rem that you are permitted to flash your headlights momentariliy (a quick flash) to signal to lead traffic of your intention to overtake, your regular indicators must then be used, 'fully'. The allowance arrives to us via the UN Convention on Road Traffic, Road Signs and Signals and is therefore adopted into the ARR's and typically imparted in the state and territory driver handbooks.

Anyway back on track.. if you had a UHF you could have spoken with the driver (as I actually do often when I am driving somewhere) and he would have more than likely said, sorry bout that .... Just because he is a truck driver, that does not mean he will be beyond making a mistake in judgement.. Thankfully you were sensible enough to think and look before booting.... That is what it comes down to, you were given a split decision choice, you chose to make your own decision....

I bet most people don't think that when a truck is passing them to either slow down that little bit (Do not speed up) and give a quick flick of your lights so they know they can pull in safely... That was another thing drummed into me from dad and his mates :

I have had help from truckies letting me know when to pass and never had an issue.
I did once take accident reports though for a van driver who waved someone pass when it wasnt clear.............. |
