Do you have a wireless network? If you do, it's a problem with continuous downloading that the connection can drop out. It happens to me all the time, as I have wireless and am constantly downloading torrents. It's annoying having to restart the router everytime it drops out.

Here is the link for dosbox. It isn't a torrent so you'll be safe. http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/download.php?main=1 . D-fend is linked from the same page. It is optional, but I have found it makes dosbox a lot easier to use. A great program, it's good fun running all the old games again. Good luck.

Have you seen the high resolution version? Runs great on XP, even without dosbox and looks far nicer than the old version too. You can download it here http://hrp.duke4.net/ . The download is for the whole game, not just the individual graphics upgrade.

Eh, been there, tried that. Doesn't matter too much. I got over it quickly.

There is a similar program for Doom, Zdoom.

Also check out the Direct3D patch for Quake.

Mate, you listed almost perfectly, with the exception of Street Rods and Duke Nukem.

Absolutely worshiped F-19, but when I got a copy of F-117 Stealth Fighter, it was like upgrading from a hole in the ground to a toilet, such an amazing experience. And the original F1 Grand Prix, spent so much time on that during my younger years. Im still the only person in the family to win a championship on the hardest level and 100% race distance. :Reverend: Go Robert Davies!

Great thread guys. Glad to see there's other people here that used to know DOS inside out as well

Indianapolis 500 (which must be REAL old as i recall playing that at primary school on EGA 16 colour screen.... which was much better than the 4 colour CGA PC we had a t home)
Nascar 1 and 2 (2003 season still rocks the foundations of my house + grand prix legends)
Indycar racing and Indycar racing 2 (and the plug ins to convert indy tracks into NASCAR and vice versa)
Poice quest/kings quest/space quest/lesuire suit larry. Sierra knew how to make a game. "Ken sent me"
Sim City series... the penultimate Sim City 2000... thankyou Maxis!
Microprose flight sims... F19, F117.
F16 Falcon 2.0 (ever seen that many 360kb 5.25in floppys????)
Doom/Heretic
Commander Keen 1,2,3,4 and 5...
Tie fighter vs X wing
Flashback was brilliant... i actually have a PC version of another world that's been converted to run on a symbian mobile phone... very cool.
Grand Prix 2 - plus the 1,005,704 plug ins you could get... lol, had V8SC running bathurst in that game at one stage....
Carmageddon (have this for symbian as well - its a great flashback)

NFS 1 was cool, yeah, but also liked the sequels.

Commander Keen
Wolf 3D
Duke Nukem
Toy Story Game

There were also a couple of other car games I can't even remember the names of now.

Ok. We all have our favourites, but the list CANNOT be perfect without Star Control II. That game had the best graphics, sound and gameplay for 1992. No game has ever come close in my opinion, because no game as been able to do it as well. Nor has anybody bothered.

We WOULD have seen more good Star Controls, but Accolade-->Infogrammes-->Atari own the rights to the name "Star Control" and won't release it to the creators, Fred Ford and Paul Reiche III.

Star Control III was terrible as it wasn't written by Paul and Fred and represents nothing of the true story that was intended.

If you don't have Star Control II or haven't played it, GET IT! Best game of the '90-'96 era by a mile IMO.

I remember if you wanted to play multiplayer online you had to organise it with no end of hassle. Duke Nukem was my favourite and to play against your mate we would have to ring each other up and make sure we were ready and on the same server. You then had to hook up the crappy 28.8kps modem and dial in (of course after firstly turning off call waiting and fighting with teenage sisters) then find him somehow through all the crappy settings to start the game.

Oh and Mechwarrier was awesome too.

That's weird. I tested the link after I set it up. Oh well, to find it go to google and type in "Duken Nukem 3D high resolution". It's easy to find. I've also got zdoom (the one mentioned by FAIRMONT4.0) which is the graphics update for Doom 1 & 2.

A great site for downloading abandonware is http://www.the-underdogs.info/ . Most of it is free, and you don't need to register (you can register but it isn't needed). That's where I get most of my abandonware. I'm hoping it's OK to post this link, as it is all old games that are no longer for sale anyway. It's not really pirating because it doesn't cost the makers of the games any money anymore. They've earned all they ever will out of these games.

And BTW, I can't believe I forgot Carmageddon in my favourite games. That is my all time favourite!

Summer and Winter games were good. I have Summer Games but it doesn't work properly.

On the High Jump, once I run past 3km/h I can't jump. It just runs into the padding.

Home of the Underdogs is by far the most extensive Abandonware and Freeware site there is. However, they adhere to the ESA/IDSA, where certain games, although linked cannot be downloaded if still protected by Copyright, which covers Maxis, Sierra, Microprose and other companies which still claim to sell these games. CHips and Bits is a site where many of these "For Sale" games are available.

Many smaller abandonware sites do not adhere to the ESA/IDSA which means these sites are eventually closed down.

Titus the Fox. Now that was a good game. Very hard though. But excellent.

With that, Prehistorik was also a lot of fun, but also challenging!

Prehistorik II had excellent music, but that was also a challenging game!
