Now on a slightly more serious note, am I better off just getting the broken valve spring replaced (if that's what it turns out to be) or do I pay the extra and get some HD valve springs put in. Any ideas on cost or if it's even worth it.

You'd be better off getting decent springs. But if you feel like being tight I've got some spare ones here.

I'm just trying to render my GT40Ps useless so I don't have the urge to put them on without doing the cam and springs at the same time.

Well it is bad news, very bad news. It would appear that compression is down in cyl 8 and that the piston has decided to call it a day. It looks like i'm up for some serious $$$ now. Worst thing is i've only had the car for 2 months and it is out of its statutory warranty by 5k. I've got an aftermarket warranty on it but that only covers up to $1k so the rest will have to be forked over by me, that is unless the car yard does the right thing.

Speak to FTG auto salvage (Site sponsor) mate, they have a AU XR8 long motor low km for $2k from memory... I wouldn't bother rebuilding yours unless you went for bigger/better.
I'll buy your block if the bore isn't injured

My mum drove my car for about 40km's after it broke a valvespring, but she didn't realise it at the time (she rang me to tell my car was idling funny ). The valve was bent from hitting the piston, and was stuck in the guide. A compression test on that cylinder showed up 0psi. The piston was marked but not badly damaged. However it had also killed a rocker, pushrod, and lifter. If your is a similar case, then you really just need to replace the broken bits and reco the heads. OR ditch the GT40p heads, fit some AFR165's, and have the lower intake ported to suit Anyway, hope the bottom end is really OK.

G&D pulled the head off and have confirmed the worst, the piston in cyl 8 is no more. What kind of a rebuild do you guys reckon I could get for say...5k? Some of you may remember that when I got her there were some issues with the tune of the Unichip, well I did get that tune fixed eventually but obviously the damage had already been done...the cause of this failure is detonation.

as for the mods watch that Matt bloke down there you could end up with a real super charged nitro fired monster and broke for ever : its such a good looking low K car to will be in touch soon .. Whoosha

If so, i doubt your talking a 5k re-build. You may need a short motor and your heads checked/repaired. The heads on the 220's already have alot more work than most. You do see low km' 220kw motors complete in parts peddler and some good wreckers. Doing this you could be on the road again for less than 5k. You made my heart race, thinking they must have weak Pistons, but detonation will kill any piston...Bad tune=MORE MONEY.. |

I think it's the piston ring hat or something or other that is the issue, top of the piston I believe so not too much damage in there.

I'm thinking mine may one day be a 347 LPG stroker (once the kids have left school, in, oh, around 16 years time, LOL).

I dont think stroking is the best option if you cant afford decent cylinder heads, and ported (lower) intake/or aftermarket intake. IMO, a std stroke 302 with some AFR165's would be a lot more fun than a GT40P headed 331/347.
To be fair though, i haven't driven either combination....so take my advice with a big grain of salt :P
