I think people have forgotten the meaning of the word Hero. When I was growing up it was a word that was used to describe some on who had done an heroic act. Not some bloody football player or driver. Have a good look at what most of you have written. Can you honestly tell me they are worthy of the word.
Just two of my Heros. Sir Edward (weary ) Dunlop. Sir John Monash. How about most of those that have died to save our country, wouldn't you say that that is the ultimate form of heroism?? |

Sporting legends. the word is used losely. Its not used to describe a heroic person. It's just to describe someone as a legend in their field of sport. Eg everyone who follows rugby league will know of Wally Lewis as a legend of the sport
I don't need a lecture on who is a hero and a legend because in the big picture our sporting hero's are just doing their sport well. Real hero's are the police, fire department, ambulance, army, air force, navy and anyone else who either risks their lives or save people for good causes. COuld the negative bull about sport stars quit already. Go start a thread about your everyday heros and leave the sporting stars alone please

Yeah 'Sporting Legend' are just 'stand out' sportsman in their 'field' in my mind.
They're not 'saints' or 'nobel prize winners', just great and succesful competitors in the sporting field. |

Roger Federer and Tiger Woods.
I believe that one day they will both be remembered as the greatest ever in their respective sports.

Phar Lap. may not be human, but even so, gave the nation hope in the dark days of the depression.
Rachelle Splatt. the pint sized darling who dared to take on the boys at their own game (drag racing), and win hands down. also 1st woman to the 300mph club, and not only the wife's hero, but her friend too. Sir Jack Brabham. the ONLY person to win the world championship in a car he designed, built and raced himself. will never be repeated. Sir Stirling Moss. greatest driver to never win a world championship, and one of nature's pure gentlemen. Walter Lindrum. billiards player of the likes never seen before or since. he was that good that they changed the rules, mulitple times, to try and beat him, but it didnt work!! in the end, he stopped playing professionally, and started doing his own 'demonstration' games, which made him more money than he ever did playing tornaments... It annoys me when people say sporting heroes, not legends. There is a difference!

I agree with most of the above, plus:
Laird Hamilton Seth Enslow Craig Loader Jonah Lomu Ian Thorpe Michael Johnson Hulk Hogan Monty Panesar The little black dude who managed to swim 50 metres @ the sydney olympics, when it was his first time in a pool!!! The third umpire who awarded the try to let Melbourne storm beat St george in the 1999 NRL grand final. Greg Murphy. ( for punting off skaife @ last years clipsal) Any other V8 driver that punts (P)rick kelly off this year.
