Is Christiania still around or has that place been cleaned up / out I wonder?? If it's still there you're best to leave your camera and wallet in the hotel and befriend a local that will spend half a day taking you around there. Shout them lunch or something ;)

Safe travels ;)

Did manage to visit the Mirabell gardens and up into the alps. Very pretty.
In Copenhagen I joined a 'free' walking tour from the Town hall, at the end you pay what you feel is appropriate, but they don't mind if you don't pay at all. Lasted over 3.5 hours, our guide was a great guy.

Only place I wasn't too fond of was Györ in Hungary. One of the Aussies I was hanging out with, noticed a guy and his girlfriend watching me and another lady in our group, so she made it clear she was watching them, and they eventually went away.

Unfortunately I've been unable to keep up with the forums, as some of the IP addresses were blocked in the last few countries.

Now I'm sitting in Changi airport for the last couple of hours before my final flight home.
Kinda sad it's all over, missing my new friends, and I was actually really sad to be leaving Finland. But I start Finnish classes again on Monday night, so hopefully I'll be back there again sooner rather than later.

Yeah , we nearly got done going into Nadi yesterday, Fire dancing show was awesome. Got cleaned up by an Indian Fijian at the markets in Sigatori. Have been warned by the locals that the Indian Fijians are a very greedy lot. Don't like em one bit at all.............

Any mention of Christiania? I was there in 06 and I got walked through the town by a local. Very interesting area of Copenhagen! Controlled by bikers, drug lords and home to some very interesting characters...

No pictures are allowed while in there. A warning that is certainly heeded by any smart tourist. When crime does happen, it is well covered up by the locals. A guy was shot the week before my arrival for breaking the 'house rules'.

I took a sneaky pic on the way in:

And on the way out:

From Wikipedia:

Quote:
Christiania, also known as Freetown Christiania (Danish: Fristaden Christiania) is a self-proclaimed autonomous neighbourhood of about 850 residents, covering 34 hectares (84 acres) in the borough of Christianshavn in the Danish capital Copenhagen. Civic authorities in Copenhagen regard Christiania as a large commune, but the area has a unique status in that it is regulated by a special law, the Christiania Law of 1989 which transfers parts of the supervision of the area from the municipality of Copenhagen to the state. It was closed by residents in April 2011, whilst discussions continued with the Danish government as to its future, but is now open again.[1]

Christiania has been a source of controversy since its creation in a squatted military area in 1971. Its cannabis trade was tolerated by authorities until 2004. Since then, measures for normalising the legal status of the community have led to conflicts, police raids and negotiations which are ongoing.

Among many Christiania residents, the community is known as staden ('the town'), short for fristaden ('the freetown').

I think the most dangerous city in the world would have to be Mt Thomas.

Occasionally I’d watch this documentary with a fat copper called SGT Tom Corydon and the crime in this place would make El Salvador look like a kid’s playground.

Mt Thomas, avoid at all costs.

Nah, it must be Midsomer in the UK. Going by the number of murders there and investigated by DCI Tom Barnaby, there would be very few people left.

Juarez, Mexico. The company I worked for has a plant in Juarez and people had to be escorted from El Paso, Texas to the plant in Juarez. You do not travel alone in Juarez.

There is mention of it in the tourist info office. It's apparently one of the most popular attractions in Denmark, but not really my cup of tea. It's cleaned up a little, but still pretty seedy.

It was one of those Ross Kemp on Gangs documentaries.

Just saw the promo on 7 for their newest offering about 1 Aussie dying in Bali every 9 days.
Pretty "dangerous" eh??
Geesh, that's 40 a year.. Hardly a huge number when you consider how many thousands and thousands travel there per year.. AND, they're probably including Aussie expats that live there for some part of the year?
I reckon more Aussies die on cruises world wide per year!!

Call me cynical, but does anyone reckon that this canning of Bali by channel 7 has anything to do with them and Willesee getting knocked back with the Shapelle Corby crap??

I watched this the other day. There were 40+ murders while he was there. Even he said it felt a normal by the time he left.

The sad thing is on the other side of the border is supposedly one of the safest cities in America being El Paso.

A workmate got back a few weeks ago from Europe, and told us that he was pick-pocketed on the main railway station in Paris. Had his wallet in his front pocket and never noticed a thing.
Lost $700au and $800eu, as well as all his cards, ID and NSW Police badge.
Last week he received a letter stating the wallet was found, and to describe the contents of it, as well as $75 for it to be posted back to him.
Sounds dodgy to me, but his daughter is a travel agent, and has been asking around to see if it's legit or not, and it appears that it is.

He said he was also approached by a gypsy in Prague and handed a "gold" ring. He guy said that he had found it on the ground and though it belonged to him.
He said no, and the gypsy walked off, then came back, asking for money, since my workmate now had the gold ring.
Again he said no, and the guy tried reaching into his pocket for his wallet!
He backed off pretty quickly once my workmate grabbed his hand and threatened to punch him.

Our guide in Prague kept telling us to put our hands in our pockets, as it was better our hand than someone else's. Quite true!

Default Re: whats the most dangerous city in the world?

That's all over Europe in all the tourist traps, the gold ring, the baby, the string, the petition, the hug, the slice...seen them all.

Although some tourists make it soooo easy...why would you work?

Actually was nearly pickpocket on the metro too, wallet always in front pocket, but caught him in the act and knocked him down and got a few kicks in...the worst bit was I went back to the ticket office to report it to the same english speaking woman I had bought the ticket off 5 mins earlier and she had "forgotten" how to speak English. They don't give a ****.

The workmate actually DID get his wallet back!

No money left in it of course, but all his cards, his police badge and the lucky pennies he keeps in it.
The lost and found department at the railway station sent the letter, and he replied, also asking for a detailed list of what was in it. They only replied saying the wallet had been posted, and that they had taken the $75 from the cash left in it.

Apparently it had been opened and re-packaged en-route here, so he's not sure if they took the remaining cash over there, or someone at the courier here took it.
