This is nothing more than another way for the Government to take full control of our lifes. Society seems to geared almost on course for a big brother type draconian form of oppression of the masses.

Holy war against Labour Government!
Seriously, WHY THE HELL are they forcing this on us? As if our crappy internet needs this, its slow enough and expensive enough as it is now. We all voted in the trendy guy with glasses who can speak mandarin, now we pay the consequences.

We're being turned into the People's Republic of Australia. Thank you very much Chairman Rudd.
This is yet another tool for this guvmint's aim of social egineering and will be used to ultimately silence political dissent. "think and do whatever you like, as long as we approve of it". Seriously though, I think paedophiles should be castrated but this isn't the solution.

Chairman Rudd is 100% perfect, I like it. I won't carry on in saying what I truly think of the people that voted in Kevin 07, but they wont need their internet censored as they are already sheep.

This link was posted earlier but since this thread has popped up again I reckon we need a refresher.
http://nocleanfeed.com/ go check out there, has contact details of the minister pushing for this, a petition. An email template to send as well, voicing our disgust at such a plan.

Do you think the government actually read anything posted on forums? I think not or else they would realise it will lead to their demise.
On topic. They have just said they are going to try it out with volunteers. My ISP better not or I will change providers. I have 1 child and 1 on the way and I am responsible enough to monitor the net myself. This boils down to hardlined religous and family groups pushing for it. Also it is the usual "Oh my johhny looked at porn, I gave him a PC in his room un monitored but the government should be to blame, god forbid I take responsibility" |

It really cracks me up how many people get so fired up about this. All of the mostly teens/twenties who will rebel and are sure "no one will do it" and "we will get around it" and rah rah rah.
Strangely when I was in my 20s everyone drove after drinking, it was not a really bad thing back them. Hooning was fun and as long as you did not annoy anyone the coppers did not care. We all used to own guns, have a few beers (heavies, no such thing as light), go out into the scrub, attempt to murder some skippies or pigs, go swimming in the water supply dam, come back, drag race in some back street where there were no houses and generally have fun. AND NO ONE CARED. Now all those things a major crimes and it seems to be same people who are screaming foul here are the ones who scream "off with his head" if any of my above "crimes" are committed today. I wonder if 30 years from now the teens/twenties of that era will be disgusted to hear a story of how there was p0rn and "anti social motor vehicle groups" on the internet back in the "naughties" and scream "off with his head" when a 50 something year old is found with a picture of a semi-naked girl lying on the bonnet of a FG GT he owned back then? |

they most likely will flappist, imagine what beer will be like in 30 years time...scary stuff!
On topic, the reason why people are up in arms about all this is no one wants it except the government. One of the main reasonings behind this move is to keep kids away from adult content online. Firstly parents should be able to use their own judgment on such a thing, much like tv, movies and games. The stupid thing is the government had a program, much like net nanny but designed for Australia, FREE to download. It failed.... why? Because parents either monitored what their kids were doing online OR they didn't care less. Either way, a ban on 10,000 + websites?? Ridiculous!

I don't normally quote a whole post, but this time I have deliberately.
Couldn't agree with you more. The trouble as I see it is people keep voting for these ^&* and no one seems riled enough to do anything meaningful to claw back our country and our way of life. I remember when we were young people and politicians were willing to have real, passionate political debates. People seemed to actually want stuff to change. Now all they seem to care about is thier &*()%#$@ mortgage rates. They cower in their urban palaces in front of the flat screen hoping no one breaks in their front door and robbs or arrests them, and believe everything the government tells them. Very annoying. the revolution will never arrive aslong as we have a nice fat middle class with loans and debts and too much to lose. Change is engineered by the opressed masses. Not the mildly annoyed plasma tv owners.
However a global depression might change the playing field somewhat. Remember, a vote for uncle bastard, is a vote for anarchy.

1. Speed. When compared to other developed nations, Australia already lags behind... we need more speed, not less. 2. Precedent. IMHO, it sets a dangerous precedent. Allowing the government to filter what is essentially the last truly free medium is not a good thing.... we're a liberal democracy, not an oppressive regime. Classify information if you like, allow end-users to block content, but the government indiscriminately blocking content it deems 'inappropriate' is not a good thing. |

If the government truly wanted to be a*holes of the highest order, they could mandate that many/most of the most popular proxy/VPN services also be blocked. People would still find ways around it, but it would make is much harder. |

guns would fix this
or just use a http tunnel, run through another computer somewhere in the world that doesnt filter your incoming data. google has also done similar, some countries respective google sites dont allow searches of certain keywords/phrases or use torrents, if its a movie, zip, mp3, document, whatever some torrent site has it, all kevin rudd has done is help make the "internet users" learn a little more...... good for him

Which is the whole point of the exercise. First... They tried filtering software at the user point. FAIL Next... They use ISP filtering of a few overt sites. FAIL Then.... They expand the system, more illegal content FAIL After that... People are still using torrents etc, Peer to Peer is banned I think you get the picture. I wonder if AOL is behind this somewhere

ISPs can throttle P2P traffic, so i'm guessing the government could just force the ISP to throttle it back to dialup speed, that'd effectively kill torrents, who the hell wants a 700mb+ file downloading at 5kb/s?
