In the early sixties in Perth myself and a few mates would get into the drive in theatre and Claremont Speedway for nix as our friend with the Customline (fathers car) would let us ride in the boot and he was never questioned as to why the back end of the car was so low.

Ahh yes, Brandavino, the drink of choice for maximum effect at minimum cost. We used to buy it by the flagon and decanter it into Halls Lima bottles as the colour was similar, and walk around with it and not get rumbled by the pigs.

We got kicked out once, for throwing about 40 empty tinnies under a mate's car during the coarse of the first movie - the goal being that excellent crunching sound when the car moves off...no RBT in those days

We used to get 20 cents deposit back on the old glass classic Coke bottles in QLD - had to have the caps on though.

Used to cash in 5 bottles and pretty well eat like kings for $1 worth of fried chips, wrapped in newspaper. Some mofo put an end to the newspaper scenario for one reason or another.

We'd jump the fence at the back of the shop and wipe the "x's" off the caps at night with metho - then return them a few days later.

It was great to be a kid back then - I'm only talking about 40 years ago!

To go back even further, in the fifties and sixties you'd get a penny per soft drink bottle which meant 2 bob for a crate. I used to collect them at the Ekka Speedway every Sat night. I paid cash for my first car when I was turned 17 thanks to that. The car was only 2 years old as well!

I remember when I started driving petrol was 29 cents a litre.

When I started drinking a case of beer (24 throw downs) was $7.99 at the local corned bottle shop.

Europe Sesame seed bars (they are still around) were 2 cents each.

Hamburger from the local take away was 50 cents. For $1.20 you got a burger, chips and can of drink.

I remember everyone saying once petrol hits 50 cents a litre people will stop driving cars as it will be just too expensive and won't be viable any longer.

No mobile phones, people would come and visit you instead of Facebook, or they would call you at home, if you were not there they would leave a message.

No internet, cars were sold and bought in the newspaper.

People used to talk to each other rather than play with electronic devices.

There are probably plenty others, but too old to remember now

I was building houses during the transition from imperial to metric, I warmed to metric much quicker, far easier to work with

I was 9 years old when we changed from Pounds to Dollars, best thing we did, those pommy Pounds were strange

Officially; but as I recall in WA at least in was marketing slang (similar to how they now use $1.99 etc) used as follows:

1 Guinea was 1 pound 1 shillings and 1 penny
2 Guinea was 2 pound 2 shillings and 2 pence (tuppence) etc

A pound was also a "quid" and sixpence a "zac."

Ahh yes Trev, I well remember when we changed over from Pounds to Decimal on the 14th Feb 1966 (remember the jingle?)
I also remember only too well, getting RIPPED off as a 9 yr old that used to spend sixpence (5c) at the corner milkbar on the way home from school. It went like this...
On Feb 13th, I handed over my 6d (sixpence) for my bag of licorice blocks which were 4 per penny, a total of 24! Next day (Feb 14th), hand over 6d again, this time I receive only 20... with the lady attempting to explain that my sixpence was NOW magically 5c, and licorice blocks were NOW 4 per cent!!
Now I mean to say... If a 9yr old was ripped for 20% on a 5c transaction, HOW MUCH did the rest of Australia get ripped off during this changeover in currency??
