When it comes to food, I don't look at just the cost. I picture Aldi as being the type of food you get at Smorgy's, Food Star and other similar low cost restaurants. No thank you.

I've never had any issue with Aldi's food quality. The fruit, veg and meat has always been fresh, tasty and tender in my experience. I suppose there would be a slight variance store to store.

They've changed the colour of the jack since I bought it, mine is blue. I think they're red now. Visually there doesn't look to be any other difference though. Especially made it easy for backyarders once I sold my ute and got a sedan. Nice and light ;)

Costco's garden hoses are great quality too and super cheap. Had ours nearly two years and still doesn't drip at all. And bought a TroyBilt lawnmower with a Honda engine for $200, have only used it twice so far but feels very sturdy and good quality. Nice big rear wheels help get it up and down the back stairs at home.

If we had a Costco in SA I'd try it.

As for comparing ALDI to low market, 3rd world food, I have been impressed so far to the point where it compares to the big 2 in taste and quality including some of my local quality butchers, but noticeably cheaper. I say don't knock it till you try it.

I've been an Aldi shopper for some years.,

Basics (pasta, rice, bread, milk, chicken, 5 star beef mince, cereal [muesli and weet bix only] tinned tomatoes [Australian], washing up liquid, honey, jams) are as good as anywhere else.

Some of their prepacked meals (burrito packs and the like) are too salty for me.

Their beef is tough, but their mince is dry and doesn't stew in all the water that comes out of the Coles and Safeway mince.

I heard on ABC radio last night that Aldi opens in markets with high wages. They only employ 10% of the equivalent Coles or Safeway store. Once they are turning over $2.5b, they bring more and more of their sourcing onshore.

One thing I have noticed about Aldi is that if the person in front has a trolley full and I only only have a couple of items, they let you go first.

Don't see that anywhere else.

Don't go to Costco with a credit card on you, it's a dangerous place for removing all available funds!

From what I have come across is that nearly everything is 2ed rate quality and the price is not that good at all.
The people that go their are bogans or real old people so my kids said to me and they do not want to be seen their at all and I thought about it and it's true.

Personally I can't wait until an Aldi store turns up in my area. I basically only eat whole foods and I don't really care about brand names. It would be interesting to see if I could save at Aldi.

Increased competition is always good for the "consumer". For many years, the local Coles was making a killing because they only had to compete with a lacklustre Foodland store... then Woolworths opened and forced them to lower their prices, then IGA turned up and continued the heavy competition. The result of all of this was inevitably lower prices thanks to increased "specials" when the stores were trying to outdo each other.

I would actually enjoy walking through a store and checking out their prices just to compare. For example, do they sell large eggs for a cheaper price than Coles, Woolworths and IGA?

Not sure where you live, but that's not entirely the demographic that shop at my nearest ALDI.

The ones I see near me are young middle class families looking at diversifying their options.

Sure you get the occasional flannelet wearing 3 tooth bogan in his VT commo rock up, but I havent seen many and Ive been there a number of times at different times since my ALDI opened 2 weeks ago.

You get crap no matter where you go, I realize that. But if you are smart enough to avoid it, I dont know what the harm is.

But to assume everyone who shops at ALDI is a bogan or old is a little far fetched IMHO.

Good point. To me its not just price thats attractive, its also where they get the goods from that interests me the most.

Bogan or old. Must be the demographic of where he lives. Not so in the birkinhead point one I used to go to.

So these 'bogans' in your area are buying the biodynamic organic yoghurt, the hand made Belgian marmalade, the Swiss chocolate, the hand made jerk sauce from England, the rich butter croissants etc at your Aldi? Damn you have classy bogans where you live...

I've shopped in a few different ALDI stores in Victoria, and it's inevitably turned out to be an unpleasant experience...

• Rude floor staff who have no idea about their product range,
• Insufficient cash registers open in peak shopping times, particularly after school,
• Lack of FECs,
• Long queues; often 10+ customers,
• No handbaskets for small purchases leads to clumsy balancing acts,
• No salvaged cardboard boxes to pack groceries into,
• Forced to pay for plastic carry bags,
• A plethora of imported EU non-perishable/canned/packaged foods,
• Non-disclosure of fresh food sources; meat, poultry, fruit and veg etc,
• Will not refund without returning fresh product; docket insufficient,
• Fruit and veg overpriced quality-wise, stale and often moulding/rotting,
• Meat cheap but poor quality from undisclosed abattoirs,
• Store branded "comfort food"—chips, lollies, soft drinks, ice-cream, biscuits—same prices as Coles and Woolies,
• Only sell frozen fish; no fresh,
• Stores not cleaned regularly, cramped aisles, excessive pallet presentation, SELs above product,
• No actual store tel number, no H/O customer complaint tel number,
• Store/duty managers refuse to divulge surname.

What about eggs? Surely Aldi stock them. I go through between 5 and 7 dozen a week. atm I'm buying them at IGA.

I said "it would be interesting to see if I could save at Aldi." I never said they had exactly what I'm looking for but it would still be nice to compare their prices first-hand.

I've had nothing but good experiences with Aldi, and when I've had to return something it's been accepted with no issues whatsoever.

I prefer to use dedicated green grocers for fruit and veg, and there's a great one directly opposite my local Aldi. But when I've bought fresh food from Aldi it's been fine, no better or worse than my local Coles or Woolies.

ALDI is too eurotrash for me. I reckon their Aldi brand coffee and their gravox are the same thing in different cans. Same with their version of toothpaste and ajax scouring liquid. Would rather spend the extra $5 for real products than give my money to the deutschbags.

Just simple a thread on here about Aldi caused you to repetitively use the words crap and rubbish so perhaps it's true.
I'm very confident that Aldi products come down exactly the same production line as the brands you buy and feel comfortable with but simply get put into a different box.
Familiar packaging and the 'shopping experience' seem to matter to a few.
I'm' very happy with the faster and easier Aldi experience

Back in the 90s my hair started falling out at the mere thought or possibility that a new to Australia supermarket chain would sell shampoo that might have repercussions for my health and wellbeing.

Why so mach hatred towards Ze Germans??

They follow a business model that has several negatives as well as several positives. I believe the positives outweigh the negatives by a long shot.

It works for them and they are making money meaning it also works for the customer.

Yes, they don't satisfy 100% of your needs, what store does?

I have had no issues and they go out of my way to support my dozens of Bunnings BBQ's I run. I must have spent thousands with them in sausages / napkins and sauces over the years and will continue to do so.

Aldi : my coffee maker and slow cooker are still going after 5 years, I am sure their Wheat Biscuits are Weetbix, taste like them, same with the Cornflakes, gluten free biscuits are the same as Coles but 70c cheaper, toilet rolls are a bargain ,double length $3.60 for 4 pack, Sure, not all stores are perfect but Aldi is ok..and with Lidl coming, game on to Coles Woolworths,,
