Newlyweds were forced to hitch a ride home with police after their chauffeur was pulled over for street racing and their hire car confiscated. John and Laina Tauranga were being driven from their wedding reception in Sydney's western suburbs when police allege the hire car clocked speeds of up to 130 km/h — 70 km/h over the speed limit. Police allege the hire car, driven by a 42-year-old man, and a Holden Commodore, driven by a 17-year-old boy on a P-plate licence, both accelerated harshly from a set of traffic lights and continued to travel at high speeds along the highway. After being pulled over by police, the drivers were issued with infringement notices and both vehicles were confiscated. Matrimonial bliss was forced to take a back seat as the newlyweds, still in their wedding outfits, had to climb into the police car and be driven home. "We've only been married for a couple of hours so we feel pretty gutted," the couple told National Nine News at the scene. The couple said they had been kissing in the back seat of the hire car. "It's very shattering on our special day. You know, starting our new lives together, we never thought something like this was going to happen." The two drivers will appear in court next month.

Let's just summarise this now and lock it to forestall the inevitable.
The young people will arrive and claim persecution and state that they can drive "probably better than most people" in a moment of hubris, while the older types will tsk tsk and complain about "those young kids and their obnoxious loud music". Let us not overlook the the intervention of the inevitable evangelist to remind us that there are bad drivers in all age groups and marques. Think that about covers it. |
