Default Worst Timing

Dont you just hate it when things go wrong on your car at some of the worst times? I was camping out at the murry for new years at strathmurton and on my way back from cobram, my alternator blows! Indicated by the battery light...and ALOT OF BLACK SMOKE. Finding someone who would replace it on new years eve wasnt very easy, by the time i found someone i didnt have a working speedo anymore. I eventually pulled in at Stokes workshop in cobram who fitted a new one for $280, and also rushed the job to the point i had to re-tension the belt. My question is, since ive replaced my alternator, it idols extremely low? to the point that if i try to creep in reverse then lay off it will stall....Do alternators cause this sort of problem? It also climbs revs a bit when i place it into Drive from park and then drops back to idol speed, and vice versa from Drive to park. I mucked around with about 4 different batteries and had it disconnected for about 1 hour prior to getting a new alternator, is the ecu ****ed off?

well most ecu's are self learning did you sit it for about 1/2 an hour in neutral so the ecu can learn itself to the car because my car when disconnection the battery resets the ecu does the same thing but if i leave the car running for bout 30mins its fine so long as i dont drive it before then.

try resetting the ecu then leaving it run for about 30mins then see what happens.

Once the battery has been disconnected you have to reset the idle. I think the procedure is on the forum somewhere. On my ED the procedure was basically to: 1. disconnect the battery again for more than 20min, (disconnect negative terminal only) 2. Disconnect the plug on the idle solenoid (near throttle body). 3. Connect battery negative 4. Start car with no accessories on (A/c, lights off). Check base idle around 700rpm, you shouldn't have to adjust(can be adjusted by screw on throttle body, screw is normally tight). 5. Let engine run for 5 min, 6. Turn off. 7 Re-connect idle solenoid plug. 8. Start engine with all accessories on and run for 5 min.
