You could probably get an older car in good condition for cheap (5ish grand) and spent the rest on forced induction, we need to know what you like and what you want out of it etc etc

You could supercharge the AU for much less than 12g. Did you consider that?

I was looking at getting one of these a few months ago. Went to roadtest one down at a local import place and came away very disapointed. Felt slower than my magna.

Skyline, Aristo, Silvia just to name a few cheap jap imports. J-spec even had a Mitsubishi GTO for 13k a few weeks ago. Thats a 12 second car!

You could get a tidy GC8 WRX for that price. I know of a MY98 in Melb going for 11k.
I have a MY99 as my second car. Love it

I dont know what you need in terms of space and seating capacity as you have'nt mentioned it.but you entertained the idea of a 5 grand car and spending on it after someone mentioned it.if you dont need a big car or plenty of seating for $12,000 you could get a 1 owner 95 toyota mr2 turbo in very good condition.a very fun little car indeed.they also seem to hold thier value quite well.not to bad on juice either.

The MR was considerably lighter than the standard GTO, something like 300kg.
Standard MKII ones are mid 13s at best with a 6000rpm clutch dump.
