Default Tell me about Ford Capris.

My mother in law is looking at buying a 1991 Ford Capri Verde 1.6L, 250,000 kays listed at $4500.

Is it worth it.

Aren't they just a chopped Laser and the 1.6L in the Laser was a slug.

I wouldn't call the 1.6 laser a slug. I have one ..... yes it is no where near the power of the Sprint but it would still allow you to get speeding fines should you not watch the speedo.

That seems a lot of money for a 17 year old can thats done 250k.

I have a F/I 1.8L KF Laser and have driven a 1.6L Carby Laser. It's like chalk and cheese. The 1.6L doesn't rev as well as 1.8L and struggles past 120.

I had a 1990 Capri Turbo.

I had 4 roofs replaced under warranty, and quality was pretty ordinary. But it seriously went like stink.

I've had about 20 cars over 30 years, and this is one of the 3 I've always regretted selling.

I wouldn't buy a standard n/a 1.6, but the Turbo is guaranteed to put a smile on your dial.

What are the turbos?? Are they like a roofless version of the TX3 Laser in that it had AWD and the Mazda BPT motor?

Hmm. That sounds like a lot of money for a 91 model with 250,000kms. You can get a newer SC or even a facelift model SE for about that money too.

We had a 1994 SE XR2 Auto. It was a great car but the auto versions aren't as quick as the manual ones.
From memory, the Verde all came in Green and had a white roof. Could be harder to source a white roof these days.
The Turbo's were just the same as the KE Laser TX3 Turbo and were FWD only.
A 4WD Capri would have been a very interesting car indeed.

Capri Convertibles aren't just a chopped Laser, though they do run Mazda/Laser mechanicals and the body sits on a Mazda/Laser floorpan!

There were only ever 200 Verde models made all in the one colour, Evergreen?and these were the first Ford vehicle to be 'treated' by Tickford, although they did not put their name on the car at that time. It should also come with a white hardtop as well, and these alone are still worth well over a $1000.

RedBook and Carpoint suggest private prices between $1600 and $3800, add a grand or so to these prices for dealer prices and the mileage range of between 170k to 320k. Though the mileage is on the high side, $4500 from a dealer is probably not too far off the mark for this rare model Capri!
