Well, its a case of "Mission Accomplished" for the media then isn't it? They practically ran the guy out of town. Pity.

Bit like Skaife too..

Hayden will stand in history as probably our greatest opening batsman, i still remember watching his H/S and world record innings of 370...
Its a pity he didn't get the opportunity for the fans to say goodbye...

Taylor was captain at the time, granted. Hayden knew at the start of summer he needed to make a score. The poor bloke couldn't make one out of 9 attempts. Still he leaves with an averge over 50 which gives him 'great' status. Big shoes to fill.

Had a unusual number of ordinary decisions go against him though... from memory 3 or 4 weren't actually out.!
Pretty hard to maintain or regain form and keep your confidence when you keep getting given out when you're not.

As great a player as Hayden has been for the Aussies it is time for new blood. If he hadn't been so stubborn he could have had a farewell test or series. The media, selectors and most importantly the fans have to accept that an era has ended and we are now in a rebuilding phase. During this time we can't afford to carry players who are realistically nearing the end of their careers any way.

Just my 2c worth

Haydos great cricketer but about time! way past is peak. cricket Australia needs a big shake up. It wasn't his own decision he was railroaded into it!

The most basic problem is that the team needs new blood and the selectors want the team to keep winning. They need to turf out the over 30's (even if they are playing alright), get the young guys in and concede they wont dominate for the next few years and start to rebuild. We need to change the win at all costs attitude we have at the moment imo

Michael clarke should be captain so he can learn and captain in the long run. Ponting possibly time to go? and make way for someone younger to develop his skills.

He really should have been given a spot in at least the twenty20 side. Just the chance to get out there, have a big hit with a bit of a lighter atmosphere could have done him a world of good. See how he went from there.

I don't subscribe to the "age" thing one bit.. and its cricket too, a sport less reliant on athleticism and more on skill, depending on your role.
Too many people see age as a hurdle... select on performance and ability... regardless of age.
If you turn players over by age to keep a "youth" policy then none will ever settle in long enough to have a decent career...

agree 100%. blooding young players and having to go through a rebuilding phase is a bit of a myth. debuting players in their mid to late 20's is every bit as effective and quite often they perform straight away as they are a lot more comfortable with their own game.

Hayden is not only australia's best opener for the last decade and arguably of all time, but one of the greats of the game. In my opinion, he wasn't actually doing that bad if you compare his scores to a couple of the other players. i think everyone expected him to come out and blast 100 etc but for some reason, no one is giving any credit to the south african cricketers. Its just the timing of the situation - south africa having a great 12months and australia struck with injuries and form.

its a real shame he won't tour south africa and england for the ashes.

not many other teams around the world would maintain no.1 ranking given that in the last couple of years we've lost warne, mcgrath, langer, martyn, macgill, gilly and now hayden. also injuries to symonds, watson, lee and clark and also no real spinner replacement. its no wonder australia have come back to the pack a bit but they are still competing. when was the last time 3 tests in a row went late into the 5th day with more than one result possible.

i find its mostly the part time supporters (summer home series) that bag the aussie team.

Bloody well said. Anyone who takes more than just a passing interest, myself included, see what is going on past the media beat ups and sensationalism. It's just sad that the media has basically forced Haydos into retirement and if they get their way Roy won't be far behind.

It's happened before, remember when Gilchrist came into the team after Heals was bumped out? I think an awful lot of people wanted Healy to go out on his terms, so much so Gilly got booed in one of his first games. (May have been Healy's home ground)
