I don't know if this has been posted before. If it has can some one please delete.
I received these pics in an email today from a Sydney Ford dealer, quite a find, just wish it was here. Subject: Ford Find Attached are pics of some GTs that were found in a shed behind a pub in South Africa. These are GENUINE GTs however the GTs that were made for South Africa were badged as Fairmont GTs. In some of the pics you'll also see what looks like a HT Monaro. This has the same body, interior, etc as the Australian Monaro with a few minor differences and was badged as a Chevy SS. |

My parents bought a pub and found a dozen bottles of 20 year old grange in the shed and I thought that was pretty good... Why couldn't it have been a dozen GT's....

Looks like to me someone has cottoned on that they're worth a bit and has scoured the countryside in Sth Africa buying them up and will export them to Oz probably and make a small fortune.

I would say its someones collection being catelogued/moved or sold off. Way too clean to be forgotten about and yes .... some wheels are a tad too modern!
Donny's Rhino just got devalued by 1/2! Who said they aren't making them anymore! | [/url] |

http://www.aussiexport.com/sagt.htm No, nothing to do with me before anyone asks, but have been looking around, and as FPV8U say it will probably be the only way i will own a GENUINE GT aswell.........

Does anyone know how many GT Fairmonts were originally made / sold in South Africa compared to how many were made here?

Saw a write up on the Fairmont GT site about these cars. Dont know how much is fact or fiction.
This was all going on in the late half of 2007, just to give it some perspective time frame wise. The story goes that the fella, or more a father and son team who bought all these cars went all over the place in South Afrika masgarading as Museum collectors. Even had a professional flyer done up and all, which is shown on the aformentioned thread. They got onto the Fairmont GT site professing the cars were for a collection, and then some time on were all advertised for sale here. Anyway, my overall impression of the topic was that their sole interest was to send the whole lot of the cars over here and sell them off for the best profit they could get. They had them advertised, at offers over 70k each as is, or all 10 for 1 million dollars as is. So I guess he wanted 100k each. That was getting around the end of the heigh point of the Muscle Car boom. Dont know if he still has any, or all of them. My impression as I said was they are only interested in making $$ on them, not in the cars themselves as entheusiasts etc. Bit of a shame, but money talks and bullshyte walks. As for values of these cars, well thats pretty subjective in this economic climate. Theres several for sale around the 50k mark, from feedback received from people who have gone and inspected them, they are either overpriced for their condition, or are in need of full resto, or have issues, have panel damage, or nothing works etc etc. Theres 1 on ebay ATM for 20k, its in need of a resto and needs a proper inspection. It looks like its got the right GT shell from the small pics, but there is some issues with the numbers and ID plate that need looking into. Could be the right car for an entry level buyer. Theres been a few restored Fairmont GT's recently sell around the 100k mark. An Australianised one painted in a diffrent colour than factory just got snapped up for 65k this month, so theres a bit around and a bit still moving. As for mine, and what I think its worth? Well, being a maintained, unrestored car, factory manual, no vinyl xtras and no air/steer in a nice colour, good trim and everything works well and is driven on every weekend, fully registered etc. I would consider selling if the offer was 80k. I think it represents good value for a turn key car in my opinion. One notable GT persons comment on my car was its one of the best complete authentic unrestored/maintained Fairmont GT's he has seen so far. Car has won 2 trophys at club outings, 1 for best Fairmont GT and the other for Best car on run, so it cant be all that bad. With Aussie XY GT prices still over 100k, and usually needing lots of work at that price still, it makes sense to look at these export cousins. They are the real deal, recognised by Ford and all the GT clubs bar W.A., otherwise if they werent real GT's, I know I wouldnt own one. Only reason I would sell would be to fund another XA GT. Hope that sheds some light on my thoughts of the above subject of these 10 cars and also helps regarding my thoughts on the Fairmont GT values. Donny.
