What an idiot he had read about the dangers of his exposure and was suffering major symptoms but delayed treatment by days. although there is no antidote the impact of his exposure could have been reduced by treating the individual symptoms, he is lucky to be alive

Part of the cause of this is that safety warnings are being OVER used.
Companies are scared of being sued by people who mis-use products that they put in warnings for the most trivial things (eg Packets of peanuts: 'Warning: May contain nuts'), and as a result we become 'de-sensitised' to these warnings. As a result, when there are warnings that are IMPORTANT, people don't take them as seriously as they should... At work we use a system called Chemwatch for chemical safety information, which gives chemicals 'ratings' on the severity of their hazards.. this incidents shows that there is a need for such a rating system on chemicals available to the consumer... |

We use a lot of this at work (Brake Cleaner). The chemical he is talking about, is currently being outlawed (Tetra).
But we have tried a few of these style of cleaners. ATM, we use Wurth Brake Cleaner , it has a different chemical NAMECAS RN% naphtha petroleum, light, hydrotreated64742-49-0.30-80 isopropanol67-63-020-40 carbon dioxide124-38-91-10 |

LOL at everyone bagging the guy out.
The poor mongrel nearly DIED And in his eyes, from something ALOT of old school "She'll be right mate" mechanics WOULD perhaps DO daily. Grab the nearest "Cleaner" and go for it. Some of the guys I know use Benzine to clean their hands at the end of the day still.... |

Didn't your mama ever tell you not to believe everything you read? Sounds to me like a little truth padded out to make a good story.

I don't see why people feel the need to bag him out, he made a mistake, now probably has permanent issues, and has put an article online to prevent the same mistakes being made by anyone else

I'm trying to find a web page to confirm it; but I am pretty sure the use of carbon tetrachloride has been prohibited for use in brake cleaner in Australia for more than 20 years.

Carbon tetrachloride has mainly been replaced with perchloroethylene (for drycleaning) and Dichloromethane (for degreasing and paint stripping).
Both of these could produce the same result when hit with a welder as they could both release HCl (Hydrochloric Acid) on combustion. It was most likely HCl that scarred his sinuses. I think the reason the do not recommend wearing contacts when welding is a) the possibility of welding splatter melting the lense onto your eye b) welding fumes/splatter getting stuck underneath the lense and continuing to irritate the eye. |
