Speaking of expansion tanks, is there any way to clean them? It's an ugly enough thing without being cruddy as well. Maybe I should just make a cover for it

I've cleaned them before by removing it, filling it with water and small gravel and shake it. Does a reasonable job.
Rice is a gentler substitute but takes a bit longer. |

I have used water mixed with "Ripper", the detailers at work have it in a 60L drum. Its also good for getting dried bat crap off paint work without damaging it.
Rip off/Ripper.

I dont like painting them because unless you leave a space you cant see the level (I know theres a sensor but I still like to know myself). About $100 last time I brought one.

$300 for alloy, ~$50ish if you paint it then you will be worried about it flaking (so you only save $50). It all depends on mucky it is, some can be real bad, others I am sure you could live with. Unless you putting your cars in show I wouldn't really worry to much unless it looks chronic.

I use one of those radiator cleaners before I change coolant & find that does the job.

Buy a B-series one ... and get the appropriate new hoses for it (still cheaper than $100)
I had a B-series one with screw-in cap without the ugly overflow hose on it. It's a neater looking unit as well ... and can be had for about $20 from a wrecker.
