Ok guys, i need a hand...
Yesterday, the car started running like crap, and backfired on gas.. Ok, my first thought were plugs and possibly coil pack.. so i did the cheapest..plugs.. put new plugs in today, checked the gap.. all 0.8mm started it up and reset the ECU.. now, it still ran rough.. i took it for a drive and it wasn't idling right when i stopped.. both on gas and petrol.. anyway, as i came off the accelerator and back on it around a corner, there was a huge backfire on gas and then it stalled.. when i started it back up on petrol it was idling at 3000rpm... sounds like its only running on 4 cylinders and wont idle on gas anymore.. my thoughts now... headgasket.. i took the radiator cap off and ran the car.. water was flying out at idle almost as if there was pressurised air running through it constantly.. Could the headgasket be split and pressurising the cooling system..? Is this a headgasket prooblem guys or have i done a little bit more damage than that..? the car is running really rough and idles at 2500-3000rpm.. i've checked for vacuum leaks but there doesn't seem to be any.. any help appreciated.. cheers kris

Could possibly be a head gasket, my EF blew its gasket recently and it ran very poorly at idle and when starting. I found with my EF the water in the radiator stunk like exhaust when it blew its gasket so that might be a thing to check. If you have a compression gauge handy do a test of the compression on the cylinders. If one of the cylinders is down on pressure by more than 10psi then there is most likely something up with the head. Thats all I can think of at the moment, hope it helps.

If it is leaking and you have access to the appropriate tools, its quite cheap to fix it yourself (as opposed to taking it to a mechanic). My Dad and I fixed ours in about a week. We took the head off and found the source of the leak to be water leaking from the water gallery into the number 4 cylinder.
We took the head to a Cylinder head re-conditioners and got it fully reconditioned for $350 (Machined all surfaces, new valve guides, seals and pressure test). Add that to a Gasket kit and bolts ($170) and It cost us around $520 to fix. Also as for any other internal damage to the engine, ours was fine after the new head and the guy at the machine shop said that the I6 engines are pretty tough on the bottom end and rarely get damaged from a leaking head. So hopefully its all good.

It wont be a headgasket, if it is, it would be the first AU Ive ever heard of (cabs included) that has blown a headgasket.
It will be something else, give it a service with new oil etc, clean your throttlebody, replace oxy sensor, make sure your plugs are good, even try and run it around the block without the airfilter just to see if it is that. Do everything you can for free first, then see what you come up with.

Don't stress about the flow of water if there aren't any bubbles apearing.
remover your intake, make sure the butterfly is closed, if so recheck all vacumm hoses. Check intake manifold bolts are done up tight. |

Its times like these when those 10mm ratcheting spanners come in handy. Those rear bolts are a pain in the butt, but with the ratcheting spanner, makes t so much easier.

Just went to ford and got the manifold gasket...
I'm gonna start doing that tonight... couldn't have happened at worse time.. i'm doing 14 hour days at work.. so it's gonna be a big few days.. As GK said to do, i'm going to change the gasket then see how it runs.. If it's still rough then i'll change the coil pack.. If so, i'm going to do leads as well.. At least i'll be starting fresh on the ignition side.. New plugs, leads and coil pack.. I'll post some pics of the hole it blew out when it backfired.. It's quite a big piece missing...

I wouldn't think so.....but here's a link to the 9.0mm Eagle Eliminator ones...
http://www.eagleproducts.com.au/prod...eliminator.php But 8.0mm should be fine, better than OEM anyway!!!
