Hi i was wondering what goes wrong with them besides the pulleys themselves?Does the spring lose it tension?Reason i ask is i can easily remove the belt by hand and could prob put it back on by hand too.It feels like it has crap tension and im wondering if it could be contributing to my high tempreture issues.

If you can move the tensioner by hand its a fair chance it's shagged however if it still has load on it it could just be the belt has stretched

I cant move the tensioner by hand but if i grab the belt near the PS pulley i can remove the belt.The belt isnt streched as i have compared it with a new one.

Sounds like it has lost its tension, Does your steering get heavy or squeal when turning at low speeds ?

Are you sure it's not a VCT belt? They are apparently a bit longer.
If the belt is pretty old, it'll have a stack of cracks in it, which if many, could allow a bit of stretching under load. If the belt has not real cracks (lines) in it, it's probably the tensioner. GK

Back to your original question
At about 200000km the tensioners get dirty internally and the grease dries up. If your tensioner is "jerky" at idle or crunchy/grinding noise when you change a belt it is dirty/worn. Should be smooth movements always. You can twist them apart, (very carefully in a vice as they are spring loaded) clean up the inner plastic lining between the 2 plates, regrease and re assemble. |
