Default Xr6 turbo VS Hiace

So The missus was driving down a street with cars parked on both sides and was T boned/ side swiped by a hiace that didn't look coming out of a side street luckily shes ok thank god. The car on the other hand didn't fair so well.

The crash repairer says it could be a write off!!

because:

1. potential damage to the A pillar
2. the front guard damage is deep and may have damaged structural elements of the car.
3. parts cost may exceed reasonable repair value.

Me and the missus have spoken about the event of a write off, the Car wasnt a particularly good example of an Xr6 turbo or cheap. We paid the money because it had exactly what she wanted.

Phantom purple, unmodified, Auto, 6 stacker, sunroof and cloth trim.
Which take it from me IS A BLOODY HARD CAR TO FIND.

If its a write off she wants another one the same which means ill be back on the hunt again. took me 6 months to find the last one EEEEEP!

P.s Hiace had a scraped bumper that was it, he was deemed to be at fault to luckily it wont cost us anything except the annoyance of having to run back and forth to insurance and she cant get to work because the driver door is jammed shut

Hiace 1 Falcon 0

if it will cost a mechanic more to fix then what the insurance value is at, they will write it off. If you can find a mechanic to fix it for less then the insurance value, they will fix it. So start looking!

Most things cost less to buy new than replace these days. Doesnt look like there is structural damage. Its a case of when the panels come off, youll know....

1 door skin and new front drivers door and front guard...
No way a write off... Chances are the excess will cover costs ???
Try cash at panel shop and DON'T go any where near a mechanic !!!
2nd hand doors are not too bad if same colour, trim nick...
Fixed similar to ED ..Fixed for $1200
including paint...
You'll have to fit the doors etc yourself tho...

That sucks Brian, the worst thing is if they do write it off, you might get ripped hard in regards to a cash payout. I'd want at least 20k as it's a turbo in what seems to be a rare colour. then you can go shopping again! Might even be able to nab a BF with the 6speed auto.

I think he's referring to the purple colour actually!

Sorry to hear about the accident! Hope the car gets sorted in your favour! I'm not surprised the Hiace fared better. As it looks like your better half was hit at low speed (driver pulled out into your girl and hit at 10-20kmh) and hit the brakes, whereas your Turbo was traveling faster and was scraped accross multiple panels due to the speed your T was traveling.

Hope it's sorted soon!

If the fellas insurance is paying, DO NOT go after a cash job. Cashies are a green light for bodgy repairs and shoddy paintwork. All off their books and no come back on the job should you have any issues.

Im doubting a write off so make sure you have some say in choosing your repairer. Go through your insurance, thats what you pay them for.

Its got my old wheels, save money on tyres when i bought BA Xr8 wheels

The cars only insured for 17,900 if its 17k of damage AAMI will just pay it out not repair it.

like i said if its above the repair value of the car (which is usually 80 percent of the value of the car) then they will jsut pay out

Once written off, you will find the car most likely at Pickles, perhaps Manheim.

there is no way this should be a write off, and 17k damage???????

Mate, If you have comprehensive insurance, claim against your own insurance. Give them the name, address and rego of the at fault driver, also if you know it his insurer and claim number, that way you will get any benifits YOUR insurer gives you and are not at the mercy of waiting for the other perosn to pay his excess or forfill any other policy conditions he may have to before his insurer will do anything for you.

i think BA panels are a bit dearer than the ED but $3500 would pull up the repairs to the turbo here if he buys second hand doors and a new guard for under $600 at my local wrecjers.,then a spraypainter for around the $2500 would not be hard to find,

Yes, the damage looks superficial from the pictures, but once panels start coming off, who knows what damage lies behind them. It MIGHT have a damaged pillar. It MIGHT have bent the inner guard region. It MIGHT have bent the upper control arm.

Once you start adding up the cost of replacing those sorts of parts, it doesn't take long for the cost to balloon out.

I hope for the OP's sake it is only superficial damage, but for those saying "no way" there would be over $17K damage, panels can and do hide plenty.
