Dudes, bought a sweet little XP ute off ebay the other day and now I am stuck like hell! I thought (erroneoure...erroneo.... wrongly) that getting a non runner from one joint to another was no big deal. Boy, I dunno where my head was, but it was most likely not on this planet. My bro got a car delivered without problems a few months ago, and fairly cheaply, so I thought I'd do the same. Trouble is, he was close to the highway. I'm not.
I have contacted quite a few guys and they all want runners. The two companies who said they'd do it want between 1200 and 2000 dollars, that is because its a non runner and theyd have to take one of those tilt tray units up there and back especially for the trip. I don't have a car trailer, and now that I have contacted the current owner, who has advised that a car trailer is about the only thing that is gonna work cos he has dismantled a bit of stuff on the car and stuck it in the back (it does have a tonnau cover) and it does have wheels and brakes but it doesnt apparently start. Dammit, I was keen on the ute as well, but I aint gonna pay $1200 to get it here. Anyone have any mates who live up that way and are keen on a cod trip and own a car trailer. Happy to pay (several) hundred for the inconvenience, tho 1200 is outta my league. Oh yeah, minor detail: the car is in Ballina and I am in Shellharbour. Close to a 700k trip. Just a short stroll, really. Any other suggestions? Like where I should stick my head? Last edited by Big Hugh Ness; 13-02-2011 at 10:07 AM. |

I paid $250 to move a car 65Ks
Its was the only local towie and thats the rate he charges Although it was only 65Ks ,its really 130Ks round trip for the truck Your best bet is ring a few towies and see who travels that area maybe get a back load on the cheap But the main issues is the tow companies have fuel, wear tear, and wages to pay 700K trip costing about $2 a K , thats not bad , is it Good luck finding someone to do it for a coupla hundred Go hire a tandem trailer for the weekend and go get it yourself Trailer hire will be around that alone, then fuel |

You could try a trucking company. If you can get it to there yard they would get it on or into a truck.
I did this years ago with a ute non runner, certainly worth a try use a bigger company as they will have the gear Good luck |

Need to find out if there is a depot at both locations for car carriers...
Get a tilt tray to pick it up and deliver it to the depot. Then once its at your local depot you pick it up yourself. Otherwise not much choice other then to hire a car trailer and go for the weekend and pick it up yourself. 5yrs ago it cost me $500 to get a car delivered from Brisbane to Townsville, thats 1100km.... with TNT ! Surely it hasnt gone up that much?

Yeah. A couple of transport co's would have done it for 670 but they require a running car, sadly. I'd have been happy enough to pay that. 1200+ is too far off my budget and makes the purchase too exxy, tho, I understand in the scheme of things its a fair price after factoring in all the costs etc...

If you drive up to Ballina and hire a car trailer from U haul you can return it to a different depot near you. Had a look for you, the cost is about $500 and has a minimum of 3 day hire. Do you know of anyone else that requires a car trailer for a day?
Maybe go up for a weekend. Ballina is quite nice. Good luck. It looks like a good project. |

Working for a car carrying company the last 30 years the problems with no goers are huge ranging from getting it on an off a multy deck transporter to once it is loaded how to get it off again if you have other deliveries along the route . and with OHS issues these days is why not many do it and those who do charge for the service, That being said the cheapest solution is to find a local transport company that can top load it with general freight Depot to depot, then all you will require is a tilt tray from ware it is to their depot, again this will be classed as a local job and should be around the $150 mark , then pick it up your self at the other end. Failing that a one way rental is the only other cheaper option

Fantastic information guys. It's a credit to you all for not paying me out. Interestingly, I posted the same message on Boostcrusing website and do you know what kind of a response I got? "Dumb ***". (which I am, but it just goes to show the cablibre of the guys here who are prepared to give you a hearing) Thanks again. Sure does look like a fun build, and a Whole lot different to my other toy, but that is another story...

you can hire a local trailer at your end for about $60 a day but you would have to tow it up there and back but it isnt that much of a big deal.good luck and the ute looks pretty good

I guess the important question is do you have access to a car with enough towing capacity (and a tow bar) that could tow a car trailer? If you do, the car trailer and a road trip is going to be the easiest cost effective option, that way there are no wages involved. Most hire car trailers have a winch so a non runner is not an issue, it just needs to be a rolling shell.

No, my ride is an RX7. At 14 mpg, I'd need to start auctioning my sister on the street corner, and since she bears a striking resemblance to Ozzy Ozbourne, I've got no hope in paying for the trip up.

could maybe try the local towies or wreckers (some wreckers have their own tilt tray) and see if they want to do a cash job maybe?
as said, find a mate with a suitable tow vehicle and hire trailer is probably the best easiest option. go see a dealer and see if you can test drive a diesel patrol for the weekend... |

Perhaps some one here has a tilt tray or car carrier (race car etc) that could help out for some cash.

I reckon, for less than $1000 you could hire a trailer and a 4wd with a tow bar for a couple days if you really had to, only issue is the insurance from the hire car company :S

Unfortunately there isnt alot of options for moving a non running car in the Kyogle/ Lismore/ Balina area. I rang around about 6 months ago trying to get my wagon from Caboolture (north of brisbane) to Dairy Flat (parts of the Kyogle shire) and I found that the cheapest option was an earth moving/ Heavy haulage company. They normally transport bull dozers and similar and said they would have no issue moving the car as they arent governed by the same laws as car transport companies are.
But its allready been said, your best option is a 4x4 and a car trailer. Although you will run into problems with that especially if you use a hire trailer as they dont do electric brakes on them (I couldnt find a hire trailer company between lismore and brisbane that had electric brakes on there car trailers) and you will be pushing the load limits of the trailer without those electric brakes which could result in fines or voiding insurance in the case of an accident. |

Depot to depot works well. Try someone like
http://cevacarcarrying.com.au/ . we have used them a few times ( Ltd from qld to perth $1600 ), Non runners from S.a to perth we used freightlines ( about $800 ) edit: ceva quote was door to door

I'd consider doing this for you, as I may be able to tie it in with a delivery a little further north.
Running the numbers, I'd need at least $800 to do it though. If it's of any use to you, let me know.
