was thinking today about tools that should be kept in the car as an emergency type tool kit. i came up with the following.
medium sized flat head and Philips head screwdrivers 10,12,13,15 mm spanner's set of pliers. cable ties Race/duct/rape/100mph tape any other thoughts ideas on this one? am i close |

I bought a $50 kit from Supercheap.
Is crap but has everything for minor "get going" repairs. For our trips away, I have a milk crate that has oil, water, windscreen cleaner, overalls, paper towel, fuses and globes and a roll of electrical cable and an assortment of rags. Haven't had to use any of it other than the window cleaner. For your list I'd include at least a spark plug socket and electrical tape. |

Depends on the car too - no point keeping a 12 or 15mm spanner in a Falcon! You would want a 14 though...
Definitely a set of vice grips Couple of bits of electrical wire Couple of spare fuses/relays and a test light And a bit of Quiksteel, or, some lead and an old steel hubcap.

+1 for quicksteel.... its in my Race Car tool box. Has got me out of a cracked sump and a heater hose crack and then survived the rest of the weekend.

Gloves, or baby wipes, don't want to get back into the car with black hands.
haha And a knife, and bottle of water, water for the car or you and the knife to cut the bottle in half to make a funnel.

all are pretty good suggestions. i think i might add a few bits an piece's to mine. i dont want it to be massive in anyway. but small basic's are a good idea.
also a 15mm spanner/socket is used in a few place's. big question is it worth carrying a 22mm socket/spanner so you can crank the car over manually? P.S 1,500th post. small celebration |

what about a hammer & lever incase you hit some thing - roo etc & need to bend gaurd off wheel etc.you allways need a hammer

It depends on the vehicle and where I'm going. When I'm traveling away I always carry a 3/8 - 1/4 socket and spanner set that has screwdriver handle/attachments in it. You know, one of those black chrome Stanley kits in the blow mold cases. One of those cheap auto electrical kits with crimper/strippers and various fuses, plugs, wire and joiners. A full set of screwdrivers in a roll up canvas pouch, another roll up that has long and short nose pliers, multi grips and shifter...... and a hammer. Also there's always a roll of electrical tape and cloth tape in the console or glovebox along with at least 1 of all the headlight and spotlight globes. Some rags, oil and coolant and last but not least, a trolley jack and 12v rattle gun.
In the Delica, it's water, shovel, basic recovery kit, you know; snatch strap, shackles tyre deflators, compressor and gauge to re-inflate tyres, exhaust air bag jack. Various screwdrivers and a roll up of spanners, pliers, a shifter and the auto electrical kit. Bushbasher

my RACV free2go card :p
but i carry a small pouch with various tools in it, jack and a proper tyre iron. Also a block of wood. incase you get a flat and cant jack the car up because the area around you is wet, uneven etc..

In 140,000 odd km I've yet to have an AU break down on me, but
Tape for repairing split radiator hoses. Can't remember what its called. about 30bux from supercheap. Puncture repair kit, found out the hard way when my BMW 540 didn't have the socket for the wheel lock nut. I always carry one of these kits on my motorbike too, worth their weight in gold. |

When you break down it is highly likely it will be in the rain, at night and on a dangerous bend where passing traffic is doing 120kph.
Your kit will need a raincoat, high visability vest, lighting and reflective triangle saftey signs. cheers Keith |
