Exclamation QLD Green light for more speed cameras

by: Alison Sandy From: The Courier-Mail January 17, 2012 12:00AM

Police in training using laser gun speed cameras. Source: The Courier-Mail
EVEN more hi-tech speed cameras will be rolled out to target speeding motorists, as new figures show police nabbed more than one leadfoot every minute last year on Queensland roads.

Despite the introduction of covert mobile speed cameras and the addition of more fixed speed cameras, police caught more than 1800 speedsters a day last year - about 75 every hour and a rise of 200 a day from the year before.

Police say the only way to change bad driver behaviour would be through the hip pocket, with more speeding infringements arriving in the mail. my comment..what proof do the police have ,that is the case????

State Traffic Support branch's Superintendent Andy Morrow said the more people who unexpectedly received speeding tickets in the mail, the more they would stick to the speed limit. again..what proof do the police have ,thats the case.

As a result, police will be expanding the use of advanced speed cameras - including point-to-point, which calculates the speed of a vehicle from the time it takes to travel the distance between two points.

Two more die as road toll climbs

Supt Morrow said the covert technology meant it was becoming "increasingly difficult" to avoid speed cameras.

"That's what I think the point-to-point cameras will achieve," he said. "If we get a few more of those set up around the state where we've experienced high crash rates in the past ... I reckon that would make a big difference."

Labor and the Liberal National Party yesterday committed to extra point-to-point camera sites.

The LNP suggested including key hot spots the Gold Coast, the Bruce Highway and far north Queensland.

Latest statistics show one in 10 drivers caught speeding were travelling more than 20km/h over the limit.

Despite the high rate of speeding, Police Minister Neil Roberts said the Government had evidence the point-to-point cameras' predecessor, the covert camera, was working because detection rates plummeted after the initial introduction.

He said the analogue fixed- speed camera on the Gold Coast Highway at Labrador detected 2500 speeding motorists in its first month of operation in October 2009.

Four months later, only about 500 were detected.

"It has introduced a level of uncertainty in the community about where speed enforcement will take place," Mr Roberts said.

"There will be additional speed camera sites and I would anticipate that would include point-to-point."

Mr Roberts said there was no specific proposal as to when or where the new point-to-point technology would go next, but police recently told The Courier-Mail provisions would be made for it to be introduced to the Airport Link tunnel. "There is a culture of speeding in this state which we simply have to break," he said.

The LNP has promised to roll out more point-to-point cameras if it wins government this year. My comment.. thats no surprise!!!

In 1998, the first full year speed cameras operated in Queensland, the state's road toll was below 300 - the only time it has been so low since 1955.

Queensland's only point-to-point camera system, which calculates the speed between two points about 14km apart, is on the Bruce Highway between Wild Horse Mountain and the Caloundra turn-off.

It always amazes me how governments can't find funding for our roads, hospitals, and schools but all of a sudden they can find millions to buy some more speed cameras

Its because speed cameras raise revenue..roads, hospitals etc cost money, don't raise revenue.

Then write to your local LNP candidate cc to LNP head office stating that while they treat road safety as a cash cow you will treat them as idiots and go out of your way to ensure ANYONE but them is in power after the next election.

Make sure you emphasise ANYONE detailing labor, katter, greens, the loony cat lady party....ANYONE EXCEPT THEM.

If enough people complain they will back flip.....they always do....

wtf is wrong with this country ???????????

are people really this stupid.

Wheres the politician saying they will remove all speed ccameras but impliment a germany style driver training and education program that teaches skills and resposibility so we become a nation of good safe drivers??

Also - so drivers need to be monitored 24/7 to ensure they dont do anything wrong, well how about monitoring politicians 24/7 to ensure everything they do is above board (including mandatory drug tests)

As stated above, The governemt is not interested in an idea that may sae live's (education and training) Because removing all speed camera's would leave a big hole in the projected budget of earnings of all camera's combined.
You know the situation is bad when the goverment looks to install more.. Media get a hold of the governments "Projected earnings for 1-5-10 years) SPEED TAX anyone? and the Maccquarie bank want to get in on the act of camera ownership.. (they wouldnt be interested in saving lives only making money!)

I am probably one of the few that does actually contact the candidates with concerns.

I have just finished another round of emails and I included the Courier Mails article. 43 of the 44 comments made at this time are against the governments road safety agenda. Im quite pleased about that. It appears the general public is finally starting to waking up. Enthusiast forums like AFF are great but we represent a small percentage of the populace. These sorts of articles used to hail speed cameras in the comment section. Full of "Its a voluntary Tax, Dont Speed Dont Pay" high horsers.
I advise everyone else to contact their candidate with their concerns. It does not take long and use the CM article to back up your concerns but also highlights 97% (43 or 44 comments if we assume they represent a cross section of QLDers) of voters concerns as well.

I just got an email back from the Katter party with regard to speed cameras.

They do not support the use of speed cameras as a revinue source.
