primarily, this is about cyclists. this isn't about who pays rego, or who has 'rights' etc.

there is a real push at the moment regarding passing distances and driving with care around other road users, specifically cyclists. one of the incidences that sparked it is this one in brisbane where a truck driver killed a cyclist, http://www.couriermail.com.au/news/q...-1226635894242

also recently in cairns, http://www.cairns.com.au/article/201...ocal-news.html

and i'm sure there are many others.

this is one campaign going currently and well worth the read and support
http://www.amygillett.org.au/a-metre-matters/

whatever your stance on the matter of cyclists on the road, have a little bit of consideration when around them, as i'm sure you wouldn't want to have an accident with one and worst case, cause a fatality, as that wouldn't be something anyone would want to live with.
many times it may mean driving at a much reduced speed until it is safe to pass, but are those few seconds really that important? surely 30seconds or so won't make a difference to your journey, and if so, then perhaps you need to plan your days better so you are not so rushed on the roads.
patience is the key, and being tolerant of all road users. whilst on a group ride yesterday there were a number of times where drivers crossed unbroken double white lines where visibility was very poor (winding roads in the hills) just to save a few seconds. on one occasion, none of us know how there wasn't a collision, either between the two cars heading toward one another on the same side of the road, or with one of the cyclists in our group as the car swerved back onto the right side of the road.

now i'm sure everyone has a story about inconsiderate cyclists etc, but please keep them to yourself. there are just as many stories about all road users and as always, its normally the minority that give the majority a bad name.

so, when you are out and about, please be considerate to all road users and allow plenty of room whenever possible.

In Qld we have a current e-petition that we'd like eligible people (living in Qld) to sign.
We are asking parliament to mandate a 1.5m side zone to help with cyclists' safety. We are also asking for a little more thinking around roundabouts.

Here's a link

http://www.parliament.qld.gov.au/wor...ns/e-petitions

We had approx 1500 riders yesterday morning take part in a memorial ride for Tanya in an attempt to raise driver's awareness. I personally have not seen that many people turn out before for such a ride.

I am part of the group given the task of coming up with a new Road Safety Campaign for cyclists here.

I have no problems with cyclists, as long as they do the right thing as well.
I have been riding bikes for years. I keep it in the bush as much as I can, but I have rode on roads hundreds of times.
I have never had a car driver abuse me, I have never had a close call or felt in serious threat. I'm usually uncomfortable the entire time I am riding. It doesn't feel right.

So for cyclists who complain they are being almost killed everyday, well take a look at yourself and the way you ride before blaming everyone else.

I cycle most days to work and I always give cars right of way where possible - keeps me out of trouble. Also made me a lot more patient and aware when driving near cyclists.

Most cyclists I encounter on the road are selfish ******. Surprised they are not killed more often. They just seem to think they own the road.

In Sydney CBD I cross a zebra crossing everyday which crosses a bike path the ******** nearly run me over and abuse pedestrians that cross there and expect the pedestrians to give way to THEM.

Seems the WORLD needs to give way to cyclists. Cyclists have a serious chip on their shoulder.

No love from me....

if i had my way, you guys would have your own road. i live on a road totally not suitable for two way traffic, very bumpy narrow lanes in both directions poorly marked. yet a hit with bike riders.

i always have to go onto oncoming traffic with poor visibility to go round. to give you the respect you guys ask for while passing.
and half the time its dark in the mornings and your led lights are brighter than high beams.

how bout a partition for bike riders to use roads that are safe and suitable for bike traffic.

bag me if you will. but i dont think the road is safe for bike riders. there is way too much going on on the road as it is.

however as much as a pain in the a#$e it is i do try to respect you.

its bound too happen. the majority of cyclists are law abiding, like motorists, its the few idiots that give the rest a bad name. I've never had a problem riding my bike in traffic but then again I've always kept as far left as possible. obeyed every road rule and signalled too let other road users know i'm going to turn or am stopping. Something mosts cyclists seem too don't do is signal when they are stopping or turning left I have noticed. I have never seen this enforced?? the 1.5 m overtaking rule is fair on roads that allow it but what about narrower roads?? I can see issues arising from this as motorist will get frustrated as they wont be able too pass cyclist on busy roads. I think the easiest solution is for cyclists too be able too ride on more foot paths and give way too pedestrians and enforce it. cyclists still should be allowed too ride on roads but as soon as traffic flow gets heavy it should be straight on too the footpaths etc, more cycle ways that should be used if ones available etc would be the safer option if you ask me then ****ing off motorists more.

i,m more thinking, build cycle lanes next to most popular roads so both forms of transport can use them safely.
it is about safety isn't it?

you will notice that most new roadways incorporate cycle lanes or separate bikeways or at least shared paths (cycle/pedestrian).

i have noticed but its obviously not enough if you need a partition? or you wouldnt need a partition if the roads were suitable.

bike riders or the motorists wouldnt have a problem. and right now both parties do.

exactly. new works take all road users into consideration but the majority of roads were built many years ago and don't incorporate cycle lanes or even sealed shoulders.

I feel for cyclists, but their arrogance makes them as popular as a fart in an elevator! Sorry Mate, but the hollier than thou and their insistance to take what is their right, placing blame upon other road users for instances, has them drop in my eyes.

Road users who tirade about the "We pay rego" crap gain less respect from me.

The expense of adding a 1.5m buffer to roads means I will never support a campaigne like requested.

The budget for 4 kilometers of Gateway Arterial Rd is about $100 million than put aside for 2000 kilometers Bruce Highway. We can't afford to make the roads wider for cyclists!

so you are happy to tar all cyclists with the same brush (as are most) and yet i bet you wouldn't like to be labelled a hoon simply because you drive a car!!

cyclists are also not permitted on many/most freeways.

all we are asking is for all road users to show consideration to each other.

as i have proven i,m all for what you do but it needs to be done safely. and alot of the roads arn,t suitable( like mine) and motorists put themselves and other road users in danger by respecting your requirements

if you want a near fatal mix for cyclists, the recipe is narrow inadequate roads, crumbling shoulders, high traffic flow that incorporates trucks. Icing on the cake is double white lines

exactly,
this is what unfolded on my road.
narrow blind corner, no shoulder. truck coming me coming other direction meeting at the same time. cyclist on the corner.
truck nearly running me off the road giving the bike as little room as possible so he doesn't kill me. we all make it out alive.
i look in the rear view. theres the guy on the bike giving the truck the finger.
what a dick and he,s the knob riding on an unsuitable road.

Yep, that just about sums it up in my opinion.

Campaigns like this may give a warm fuzzy feeling to some, a bit like watching an RSPCA commercial, but the real world, especially Queensland and SA are not commercials.

Fact. Most highways and major roads are just not suitable for push bikes to be riding on, it’s as simple as that. So why try to shift the onus on car and truck drivers for the poor decision making (read stupid decisions) of cyclists?

Just because there’s a law that says you are allowed to do something, like ride a bloody push bike up the Bruce or Dukes Highway, doesn’t mean that it’s a wise thing to do.

Let’s not get the law mixed up with common sense.

funny how different people view things. what i see is 2 motorists too impatient to wait literally seconds to wait for the other to pass, before going around an obstacle!!

if there is an obstacle on the side of the road, or a car parked etc, do you just barrel on around it regardless of what is coming, or do you give way??

why should a cyclist be viewed differently?

.... been in that situation many times. Doing 70k's on a road, suddenly a few bikes abreast on a single road as you come around the bend doing 25k's while their having a Sunday morning chat ...... its either through them, though the bush or overtake. Coming to a stop can be just as exciting. But anyway ..... I suppose I shouldn't have been doing 70 in a 80 zone! It is not just a matter of 'Give way'! It is not a one way street here ...... it takes 2 to tango. Consideration for all.

PS .... Parked cars don't move! Usually they aren't parked on the side of a crappy road on a corner in the middle of the road .....
