Default Buying a car for someone else?

Is it possible? I want to buy a car from a dealer as a surprise for someone. Can I sign a contract of sale and have the car transferred into someone elses name? I don't want to transfer it into my name and pay stamp duty then pay again to transfer it again.

you can buy a car when going to register vehicle tell them you want it in other persons name be aware you are liable for repayments (if under finance) they also need to be there when you do transfer as their details need to be put on paperwork

yes, assuming you are paying cash, just tell the dealer. The contract will be in your name, but the vehicle can be registered in theirs.
(the legal processess can be a bit tricky, but providing you're on good terms with the dealer, they should be happy to help.)

in queensland.
the contract can be in your name ,but the person name the rego is going in needs to sign the form and a copy of there licence .
if it is a surprise you may be able to sort something out with the car yard so it temporarily is still in its name till the forms are signed.

Thanks. Looks like I'll need to chat with a dealer and hope they'll be flexible. Now to find a car.

Vehicle registration transfers between family members

Am I eligible for this exemption?

The transfer of a vehicle to certain family members by way of gift is exempt from vehicle registration duty. A family member may be any of the following:
  1. spouse
  2. parent or grandparent
  3. spouse’s parent or grandparent
  4. child, stepchild or grandchild
  5. the spouse of anyone from (b) to (d).

The transfer must be wholly by way of gift.
Note: The term 'spouse' includes de facto spouse and registered partner (under the Relationships Act 2011). This exemption does not extend to a transfer between siblings, parties related by marriage (excluding spouses), aunts or uncles.
How do I claim the exemption?

To claim this exemption, you must submit either the relevant evidence (listed below) or a Transfer of vehicle registration statutory declaration (PDF 40 K) when registering the vehicle with Queensland Transport. If transferring to a:
  • spouse—the marriage certificate
  • de facto spouse—a statutory declaration stating that the couple are living together and have lived together for at least 2 years on a genuine domestic basis
  • partner in a registered relationship—a registered relationship certificate or a statutory declaration stating that you are in a registered relationship as prescribed under the Relationships Act 2011
  • child—the child’s birth certificate
  • stepchild—a birth certificate and marriage certificate, or a statutory declaration in the case of de facto relationships
  • parent—the child's birth certificate
  • grandparent—a statutory declaration signed by both parties stating their relationship.
If you have already paid registration duty and did not claim an exemption, you can apply for a reassessment. Lodge the above statutory declarations or certificates with us, together with a written request for reassessment.

In Vic, the exemption for stamp duty on transfers only applies between spouses or domestic partners, or ex's thereof, not even your kids are included!!!
