As Holden's manufacturing future remains under a cloud the Commodore has had its best monthly sales performance in two years.

Preliminary figures show Holden delivered more than 3300 new Commodores in October, an increase of 35 per cent compared with the same month last year.

"It just goes to show that there are a lot of Australians out there who want an Australian-made car," said Holden's sales and marketing executive director, Philip Brook. "It's a great result considering it is a soft market."

Industry analysts believe new-car sales dipped by 2 per cent for the second month in a row, but official figures are not released until next week.

But it was a somewhat shallow victory for what was Australia's favourite car for 15 years in a row, ranking third behind two Japanese imports, the Toyota Corolla and Mazda3 small cars.

"The market has changed but the results of the VF (Commodore) prove we're building cars that people want," said Mr Brook.

Having clocked up its fifth monthly win this year and the second in a row, the Toyota Corolla is on track to become Australia’s top-selling car for the first time ever.

In other upsets, South Korean car maker Hyundai pushed Mazda off the podium for third place for the third time this year. And Hyundai's sister brand Kia pushed Honda outside the top 10 for the second month in a row.

In a stark example of the impact of the imported competition, the Volkswagen Golf outsold the locally made Holden Cruze small car for the second month in a row.

Yes, and then what happens when the 'newness' of the VF wears off?

These spikes in sales are due to a lot of VE owners making the update on a car that goes back to 2006. When that settles, expect sales to go down to 2000 - 2500. Probably even less than that.

I can't see any data that extra Commodore sales are due to VE owners updating their cars - maybe these are conquest sales from other large sedans ?

Interesting to see Golf up, pricing offers? Surprised Amarok didn't get a show seem to be pushing that hard, and if Holdens Colorado comments are to be believed it'd be in the top 5.

The Thai factory is running flat out and they're selling everything available worldwide.

Automatics for 3.2 are supply limited form USA until it brings the new line on at Liviona - for US Transit and global Ranger

Don't know why people are buying total rubbish like dual cabs is it a trend or price and fuel econ has still got nothing to do with it. a mate has the new D max what a load of rubbish they are, i could not wate to get out of it and i was in the passenger seat. nothing but just total backward pice of junk !

I could not believe it when holden brought out that big heavy VE it's like 400KG more then a VS commodore and you can't see out of the VE that well.
And the falcon is to big as well, so the wife bought a Aurion because she can see out of it better. I wanted the falcon but she did not like it. she did not like the camry 4 cyl engine to harsh and gutless.
The mazda 3 engine was harsh and growling all the time as well, just junk !

Probly cause a lot of people who are buying dual cabs are tradies and can use the vehicle for work and play on the weekends. Bit hard working out the back of an Aurion........... Horses for courses.........

And what are Ford doing to fix this? We have being hearing this story for over 18 months.. Either you're wrong & supply is not an issue or Ford need to do something to fix this problem!!

is it a problem? if they are building flat out and selling everything they build world wide, i fail to see how that can be construed as a problem. if so, its a very good problem to have.

It's a problem if potential buyers keep walking away and buying something else. You are then losing profits, not to mention ****ing off buyers whose waiting times keep blowing out.

sorry, i don't agree. if demand is outstripping supply in your business, then you would be a very happy business owner.

australia is a little island out in the middle of the ocean. if they ship 2500 units here, give or take, and sell all of them, i fail to see the problem.

its the same with focus. its the biggest selling car in the world, and australians buy about 1000 of them. if they didn't sell a single unit in australia, then they would probably still be the biggest selling car in the world or at least still up the pointy end. australian sales aren't really that critical to the big picture. if they bring in x amount, and sell x amount, then they have done what they set out to do.
