Until we know what make and model the cars are and what exactly constitutes a "dodgy batch", this can't be put down to solely the fuel being at fault.

I am not affiliated in any way with any ethanol producer (I don't use the stuff because it is a false economy, I use 20% more fuel when running E10 in the BeeEmm).

20 cars, I think you can put that down to the fuel being at fault

I've had a dodgy batch of 98, it can affect any type of fuel.

We know someone who this happened to with standard ULP, 5 cars broke down less than 100 metres from the servo. Dodgy batch, BP agreed, paid for the repairs.

One of the cars shown was a VF SS. Wouldn't E10 be against manufacturers recommendations for that type of vehicle?

You can get multiple grades of E10. 91, 95, 98 and 100 can all be a E10 fuel.

SS can run on E10 (think they can do E85 as well or that might be only the 6's) but E10 isnt the problem. They'd stipulate the RON of the fuel.

Edit: They can run on 91 not E85 think they have finally dropped it as they were saying they would.

From the Holden Website for the SS:

Recommended fuel ULP or PULP for slightly higher performance (E10 compatible)

That's why I run a dedicated fuel/water filter as I don't have enough coin to repair a potentially stuffed engine. At least this time it looks like Caltex has owned up...

i recently spoke to tanker driver, he was already set up and the fuel was unloading , i asked him about the inground servo tanks, and that often i have noticed in quite a few servos the tank fillers where not even marked,
"he said yes thats correct".

I said to him are all the fittings different so you cannot put the wrong stuff in, his reply ...... "they are all the same".
i said they must get the wrong stuff put in on occasion, it would be very easy to do?
his reply, " they do get a mud map of the layout , but that happens more often than you might think and it costs the company a lot of dollars and usually it means the tanker drivers job".

so there you go, not only can you have problems with water contamination, there is always the chance you may get dodgey juice another way( keep a receipt ).

It is called a shandy or a crossover. All tanks are supposed to be marked as are the compartments on your truck, and they correspond with your paperwork. There is a work method statement on unloading. Shandy's happen if a driver doesn't follow correct procedures. Multiple car breakdowns usually correspond with a driver that hasn't followed procedures. Tanks do crack underground, and water can ingress. This is found by daily water tests though. The driver involved would be facing disciplinary action. Or the tank will test faulty.

Any driver unloading into an unmarked tank should be sent to the dole queue, as should the Site Manager. You check this stuff daily, and anything missing needs to be repaired ASAP. In 8 years of ops, we never had a cross-contamination incident, in Qld at least.

I filled up my boat a few years ago with unleaded from a bowser and then it wouldn't start when I put it in the water. Turns out the servo had a delivery early that morning and the driver filled the 91 tank with diesel.
About 6 cars and 4 boats were affected by that. I lost a day on the water and the distributor paid all my repair costs.

About 15 years ago I pulled up at the Shell servo in West Ryde and filled up with 98 Optimax and after idling the car and backing it up to check the air in the tyres it died and I had to have the car towed away.

I had it dropped at a mate’s place who was also my mechanic at the time and when I came back to pick it up he said the word was around that I was one of many that had suffered the same problem.

The tank was full of dirt.

I went back and spoke to the Manager and was told it wasn’t their fault and no-one else had complained and after a couple of words being exchanged I still ended up footing the bill for the problem.

So nothing new in this story as far as I’m concerned.

A mate of mine got a dodgy batch of fuel many years ago. He made it 100 metres up the road before the car stopped. Fortunately he had a receipt for the fuel and the fuel company footed his repair bill. Although it's never happened to me, I always keep the receipt for fuel in my wallet till next fill just in case.

One motorist caught up in the calamity and whose car was left without power after filling up with the E10 told 2UE he feared his engine — which he said was worth $50,000 — could be ruined.

Not sure why people are swearing black n blue it's never dodgy fuel. (There's a whole other thread on it) There's many cases where the fuel companies have paid for repairs and they wouldn't do that lightly. They know they stuffed up something.
My economy is terrible on ethanol. No thanks. I'll take the risk on the same regular watered down fuels we've had for years......
