VICTORIA’S top cop has been caught speeding.

Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton has revealed he was detected breaking the speed limit on the Peninsula Link freeway southeast of Melbourne yesterday afternoon.

He was detected doing 108km/h, with an alleged speed of 105km/h, in a 100km/h zone.

“As Chief Commissioner of Police I am deeply committed to road safety and am embarrassed and disappointed to find I have gone above the speed limit,” Mr Ashton said.

“This was as a result of a lapse in concentration, which does not excuse my actions, but does highlight the need for constant attention behind the wheel.


“I regret my actions and believe I should be held to a higher level of accountability than the general community.

“Accordingly, I will be paying my fine but also donating the equivalent amount of money to Road Trauma Support Services.”

It isn’t the first time one of the state’s top police officers has been caught speeding.

In October 2009 former Chief Commissioner Ken Lay, then Deputy Commissioner of Road Policing, was detected doing 80km/h in a 70km/h zone.

This is why the tolerance shouldn't be 2 or 3 km/h. 8km over at 100 is nothing, and no-one has ever died because of that type of low "speeding". The tolerance should be 10km/h, and we wouldn't even be having this thread. It just shows what a mockery this low tolerance is in Vic, Qld and other states.

108 detected on the camera, but then they take off 3 for the camera tolerance. Makes even more of a mockery of the system. that's how people get fined for doing 100 in a 100 zone

Well you'd think it would of made him open his eyes to how easy it is to just slip over without realising, but NO.

At the end of the day, he is human and therefore capable of error.

It's not as if he was traveling at more than 10% over the limit. He also made no excuses for himself (besides lack of attention) and acknowledged that he should be held to a higher standard.

I understand the significance of this but I don't think he has acted in a particularly hypocritical fashion.

You know what would be great... one of the 'ACA' style programs sets up a dash cam that displays GPS speed while recording and follows some of these clowns around for half a day. Bit like that chap (polly???) that got done on his mobile phone a few weeks ago.

Then bring them into the studio and show them the footage and see if they willingly pay the fines they have racked up and of course hand in their license.

When you think about it, almost every driver 'speeds' in some way while on the road. Just a matter of luck if you get caught.

On the M5 (just after the King Georges rd exit going westbound) there has been a 'road works' sign (80) left behind by accident (IMO) AFTER the road works. The sign covers about 400m of road that has not been touched and looks exactly the same as the 'end of road works' sign (100) up ahead. I wonder how many they go there during double demerits??

Signage is a problem as well, the apparent lack of standards or checks allowing a dozen signs in short distances (when we need to be keeping our eyes on the roads right) or the mobile speed camera operators that put a 1.5 x 2.5 foot sign in the gutter warning 3 lanes of traffic that they are being watched...

Oh well... I guess we can rely on our outstandingly efficient public transport system as a viable alternative

Also which is why accident rates are up, Drivers to busy keeping an eye on speedo so as not to go 1k over the limit (ZERO tolerance or allowance in WA),instead of watching the road & whats happening around them!!! We should stand up & be counted RE: revenue raising,Knee jerk reactionary politics!!!
The road rules (lmaorotf) are made up by bureaucrats trying to raise money instead of drivers trying to get road safety a free (hahah) flowing traffic!!

The way the cops bang on about lack of attention and how it's no excuse has now blown up in his face. We are all human and incapable of concentrating 100% of the day. This proves the ridiculously low tolerance we have here in Vic is nothing but revenue raising.

Having just driven 2500 kms in the holidays, you are forced to constantly scan Speedo, speed signs etc. There are that many speed changes for no reason, constantly going from 100 to 110 back to 100 for no reason. I generally use my cruise control but with constant speed changes its not hard to get caught out.

Sign of the times in Australia, got to get revenue from somewhere.

Well, it's a fact the various governments are making an absolute mozza from the revenue generated from low level speeding (5km or less over) which is of minimal risk to the motorist. To justify this blatant cash grab the mantra of any speeding is going to kill you and anyone around you is wheeled out.

I try and use cruise control but get sick of constantly turning it off and on, because of the flow of traffic isn't steady. Even when I think I'll set it 5 kay lower then speed limit still find myself turning it off and on, and this is on a 4 lane motorway.

Having a 10km tolerance would defeat the purpose of having a limit

Here is a basic definition:

Limit - a point or level beyond which something does not or may not extend or pass.

Your tolerance is 100km already in a 100km zone, the LIMIT is the absolute maximum you are allowe to travel, the tolerance is not something the public needs to be concerned with as they have already been told what the LIMIT is and any driver needs to be proactive in remaining within the rules, only the driver controls the speed of his vehicle.

Seems like a pretty basic concept to grasp, yet many still don't get it.

He got caught going over the LIMIT and has paid the price for his breach, seems like a the system is working perfectly as intended.

Speed limits should be based on driver skill - graded from A to say E grade with practical tests and experience taken into account . This way lower skilled drivers would have incentive to practice, learn and improve.
It makes no sense that someone like Mark Webber or a Truckie with 20 years experience is only allowed to travel at the same speed limit as learner driver.

No, speed limits should be set at the 85th percentile. But that would mean most limits would be raised and revenue will suffer.
