Without reading the news story (no link) I'd say because Australia's emissions regs are not as strict as some other countries, new vehicles are being sent here which won't pass these other countries regs. It's not like our market is being flooded with new vehicles and they all pollute more than the same models going into other markets. Stock shortages proves that.

“The department said an estimated 620 Australians died in 2015 due to transport-related air pollution, equal to more than half the national road toll, and which cost the economy about $9.2 billion.”

I thought diesel standards are at Euro VI already, all my vans are at least, so is this more about petrol powered engines?

“Dumping”, what emotive garbage. Car makers only export cars out to meet the countries standards and needs. No point in offering a 5 star car in a developing market.

But a big chunk of the air pollution we inhale is when we cook, use the fireplace, the barbecue, etc. It's incorrect to attribute it all to cars, especially considering it's particulate matter/smoke that is the largest contributor. Wasnt there a thread here a while back about banning fireplaces? |

The important part of the statement is ABC - do not believe anything that they sprout. Been at two events and then watched their reports - a total fabrication. Also, any of their reports that have a science content are usually lacking the full story, are peddling an agenda or just wrong.

no we are still at Euro 5. What you might see is that we get Eu6 as a freebie in some variants where Eu5 is no longer manufactured anywhere. My transit has Ad Blue which typically isn't required for Eu5 commercial vehicles so I think that's what's happened there.

It's a shame that Government doesn't put up some carrot sticks towards less polluting vehicles. For example there could be GST exemption for small EVs.
But it looks like many people are actively shifting their super funds into non-polluting and low carbon industries, and also starting to buy more EVs without subsidies. Starting to see so many Tesla vehicles in Perth western suburbs now. That's happened in the last few months. |
