Anyone from or been to Darwin??? need info!!

Hey all,

as the title suggests im lookin for some info on Darwin, not the usual touristy crap the travel agents have.. basically just peoples opinions of the place..

Im currently living in Perth but my GF has been offered a 2 friggen year contract in Darwin which is too good to refuse so im considering moving there, very reservedly hehehe.. :jab:

Anyone know what the IT/Software Development industry is like there? im thinking somewhere between SFA and just FA.. hehe
What about computer shops etc?? is there even one??

I know theres an army base up there, does this mean darwin is full of army guys all the time???

and is it as humid and crap as everyone reckons??

i cant really help you with the other stuff...but i do know that there are plenty of IT jobs in darwin. Dept of Defence always advertises positions in darwin...hard to get ppl there...but ur willing(semi) moving there...so getting a job should be easy. Basically plenty of entry and mid level jobs.

And yes the weather is everything uve heard and more....

haha well thats good news about the jobs but bad about the weather, i friggen hate humidity !! i might check out some online jobs places cause i really thought IT would be a joke up there !!

If you hate humidity then I suggest you find another girlfriend cos 2 years up there and you will probably hate her.

I worked outdoors in Darwin for 10 months and I must admit at times it was very difficult , It was a good thing my boss up there had a healthy appetite for VB,....lol...

The NT driving environment away from towns on the open road is far more relaxed (//) and from Darwin, this is 40 kays or so out.

Keep those tyre pressures up high.

Beware usual wandering stock and drunken pedestrians in town areas.

Lunatic speeds under (//) are not tolerated.

Rear fogs handy in HEAVY seasonal rains.

Hey mate , I live in Darwin ! there are lots of IT jobs up here and the heat isnt that bad ! it does get pretty humid sometimes but its not al year round . its satarting to get warmer during the days now , but the humidity is still low at the moment . The nights are still realy cool at 9pm .
come up give it a go , see how ya like it ! Nothing like experiencing life , especialy if ya have a hot girl to share it with ! :nutsycuck

Just to counter last post I spent 6yrs in Darwin and loved it there is heaps to do and see and this was back in the 80's and its grown a hell of a lot since then.

I've stayed in Darwin for business occassionally, the longest trip was for a month and I hated it. It wasn't the wet season, but the humidity was still killer. It was SO BORING!! The TV up there is BS too, nothing ever on except for a tourist channel thing that runs repeats (it's like Getaway on a $50 budget). My brother lived there for a year and hated it too.

For me, the best thing about Darwin was the trip home.

My parents are in Darwin so semi regular trips are becoming a way of life for me. If you can get used to the humidity, the rest is easy. There'a plenty to do as long as you don't want to go clubbing every weekend. If you've got a bit of outdoors in you, you'll never be bored up there. There are always a few AJ's wondering around but the place isn't flooded with them(ie. in uniform)

The funniest thing about the place for me was sitting out on the deck at 9pm in a pool of sweat, watching the family dissapear inside and come out with tracksuite pants and a jumper. If you are into trail bikes, there's plenty to see that way too...

The best thing about Darwin... NO hustle and bustle. No one's in a hurry and no one gives a rats. Very easygoing place to be.

I stayed there for 2 months a few years ago during the dry season, it wasn't humid at all, around 30-32deg everyday with only a couple of showers in that time. Wet season (Oct-feb/march) would be a different story though.

They sell beer in every deli in Darwin too :P

hahaha ya gotta love Qlders sometimes. of course it's boring if you sit around watching channel 8 or Imparja for a month. maybe Brissy is the best place for you :evil_laug

nang3, just do it and if you don't like it, at least you've widened your horizons and experiences in this world.
for me, i loved living in the top end and would gladly go back if i could get work that pays similar to what i have now.

thanks guys defo given me a lot to think about.. sounds better than i thought, but the humidity would be a killer, as well as leaving my career and house etc..
maybe il know closer to the time, got about 5-6 months to think about it and by then i should know if shes a keeper or not..

2 years in Dawrin... that's a sentence.

If you can handle the weather... (I thought I could) you're a trooper.

I remember getting off a nice air-conditioned plane... and by the time I got to the terminal, my shirt was stuck to my back, my trousers were stuck to my legs... sweat was running into my boots.

It was at first strange to see fence pailings shooting out branches.

Gone troppo is not just a saying, I've seen very together people throw monitors on the floor for very little reason... you had better like getting on the PI5S to survive 2 years up there.

Go fishing up there every year and sure it''s hot but so is the fishing. Reason enough to move there for me. Aboriginals can be a bit annoying but as long as you dont own a shop then they will generaly leave you alone.

Warlock,where have you been hiding the following is a short list of the car scene...Drags...speedway...V8 supercars...several clubs for various makes.
Hope that helps...just in case they're still going try and find the King Cobra Hot Rod club...they got the drag strip started and were involved with other clubs to get the circuit built for the V8's.

been looking all over the net for car clubs and found 3. 2 off road clubs and a car enthusiast club which don't have a website and don't respond to email's lol is there a ford owners club up there? im moving there in 3-4 months and i am woried im gonna hate it there cause there is nothing for me up there as i don't drink beer of fish

lol got realy sick when i was younger on it so now i won't go near it's the same with vodka lol and even orange juice lol im a bourbon man.

the missus has been offered a job there she was offered a job here in canberra to but we think it would be good to experience the move and anouther part of australia. never nerver know if you never never go and all that crap lol

hehe yeh im a bourbon man too, well pretty much anything except wine really.. or chartreuse baaaarrfff !!! had a really bad night on that stuff, 8 shooters followed by a schooner of the crap - felt like a barrel of a55 the next day !!!

yeh thats why part of me is considering going - the never know if you never go etc... ive lived in perth for the past almost 25 years and could be time for a change... if i was married to her id be up there in a flash, but its the whole uncertainty thing that holds me back.. its a lot to give up housewise, careerwise and friendswise when im not even sure if i'll be spending the rest of my life with her !!!
