Default AU Influence

They said something like the Australian market wasn't ready for the AU design... but what car designs has the AU had a potential influence on?

Post your throughts:

I recon since the AU came out, despite the lights, the more oval curved aero-dynamic roofline and bonnet that was used seems to be the norm for most cars these days , all cars were a bit more squarer before the AU , i think the AU really set the way in sleak/aero-dynamic looks compared to cars before it.
I remember the first time i saw an AU all i saw was the lights and the cheesy grill (didn't even notice the body shape then really ..lol), and i thought "YUK" , but times change and the shape of the AU has really grown on me since its past arival, looking at older cars like my old XE now i think "gee , almost a tissue box like the old volvos" ..lol , still love my old xe though too ;) .
just my 2 cents.

Yup plus their 17" five spoke rims are nearly identical to the AUII 17" Tickford 5 spokers.

lol , is this gonna turn into the burn the holden crummydore thread ? :evil_laug ! ..if so dont mind ..lol , but imo i dont the the Au series fords look anything like any Holden . Allthough from a distance from the front end of the newer ba-bf's i see a resemblence to the older clubsport crummydores , i dunno , they all sorta look the same to me these days apart from the original au and the au XR series , is why i bought a AU XR ;) .

The Mercedes lights look a lot like the AU's, but also check out that boot lid line as well. The Germans just copied! And I'm sure most Aussies love the look of it too, while so many bagged the good old AU!

Ah it's a conspiracy I tell you LOL!

The current , more trianguar shaped rear lights, both only appeared on Holden AND Ford, after the AU. Before that they both had a rounder, longer type tail light. SO Id say Commodore and Falcon taillights may have been derived from the AU?

Does anyone think that the AU tail light design might have been stolen off Mitsubishi... or others? This is a 1997 Magna:

But Ford made it famous.... take a look at the Lexus IS200

But there was another mercedes that had even more triangular tail lights like the AU... I actaully mistook one for an AU from 50 meters behind... anyone know what this one was?

it goes back further than that.
Look at the TE Cortina taillight and compare it to the Magna sedan .... and also AU wagon and onwards.

I don't know about the TE Cortina. I mean that is like comparing a circle to a square. I know that everything evolves... but I think the Cortina is a bit too basic to comapre to.... you could say early model commodore/falcon tail lights came from that...just a bit longer.

Not so much for copying the AU design.. but the styling of the later magnas and lancers.. especially the front head-lights were no doubt influenced by the AU Styling.

Thats the best thing about the au with all these new cars it means it will take the au along time to date. I was thinking if you lined a ba up next to an au and had someone who has never seen an aussie car I wonder which one they think would be the newer model

Yeah, the AU head lights are very unique. THe new magna tried it and biy did it look crap. Can't beat an original.

Cool thing too is that the AU was never repeated like the BA/BF and EF/EL
