Default Wagon vs Sedan performance

Just wondering if anyone knows if a wagon is much slower than a sedan performance wise? i.e. 0-100 and quarter mile times? I think they only weigh around 50kgs more than a sedan. I'm talking mainly about ea-ed wagons but interested about any models really.

They are quite a bit slower, mainly because they are more than 100kg heavier.

Isn't the old rule that 50kg equals about 0.1s down the quarter?

so based on that they should be about 0.2s slower...


I'm not sure why, though, but something tells me they would be slower than that. :P

My old man had an AU wagon I6 on factory dual fuel. The thing used to haul ***! I've driven AU sedans that felt nowhere near as quick. Perhaps it was just a freak!?!?

The AU I6 is a pretty powerful engine IMO. I've done a MotorKhana in one, it was a wagon, and i had a great time.

Its a shame that Motor mag etc dont do comparisons between sedan v's wagon. The best way i could see to do it is if you had a stock wagon and a stock sedan and ran them down the 1/4 a few times. Then average out the times...

The wagon would have to be slower, because of the extra weight.

i own a v8 eb ghia wagon it run a 16.1 sec 1/4 and i have gone up against NZ V8 EB ghia sedan an it runs about a 15.95 sec 1/4 this was when he still had the auto these cars are identical right down to the color ecept one is a wagon and one is a sedan. So the extra weight cost me about 0.15 seconds

well my eb wagon manual, wade 1004 112 cam, pacemaker extractors, 2.5inch exhaust, bmc filter... i've dragged my brother in his stock eb sedan auto. i beat him off the line easy enough but once we get to around 120kmph his car catches me. so i'm thinking something is seriously wrong with my car. i've done a few runs using a g-tech and i get around 8.5seconds 0-100 and 16.3 quarter mile.

My wagon isn't too shabby. I'd gladly take on a similar spec sedan and see how it would go, especially now that it has the 5 speed and the 3.27 gears. Anyone have a gtech in the Bathurst/Orange area?

well i played around a bit with the timing today and managed 0-100 in about 8.2seconds and a quarter mile of one 16.1second run and two 16.2second runs... i think if i had grip on the rear tyre i might be able to just get a high 15 maybe...

your problem is your manual gearbox nz,s car went backwards when he put in the 5 speed corect me if im wrong nz.

Ive never done the quater in my wagon ..... well never done the quater in anything yet :P ... but I know the handling will be different ... long wheel base v shorter sedan wheel base .......

My personal belief, apart from the few kilos extra, Is, it is all in the drivers ability .....

it is a 6cyl. and i'm pretty certain its a little bit quicker manual then it was auto.

With manual there is a much greater emphasis on the driver than with auto. I've noticed auto cars give much more consistent quarter mile performance from one run to the next, whereas with manual, the launch and shifting is critical.

I'm quite sure drag would play a part in performance. The wagons' rear isn't streamline-friendly, so it'll chew up more kw to cruise at say 100km

ie, an EB sedan might require 10kw of power to keep it cruising at 100kph (no winds), while the wagon variant might require 12kw due to its more abruptly-finishing ****-end. :p

i agree you dont get as consistent times with the manual.. plus my diff is only a single spinner 3.27 ratio.. and i have a bald tyre so i cant launch it hard at the moment.

i guess the wagon would drag a bit more and more weight.. would slow it down a bit.
