Little help... How to install RAM

G'day everyone.

Is there anything special to do to install RAM?

At the moment I have DDR 256Mb installed. I want to replace that with DDR 512Mb.

Never done this before, so any help would be very much appreciated.

well if you wanted to be really really carefull you get an anti static mat and strap and earth yourself to the floor before you start.

otherwise just disconnect the power pull the top off, touch the power supply case before you touch the ram ,pop the little white tabs back, pull out the old ram, put the new ram in the right direction, push it down fairly hard till it clicks into place.

put the lid back on, power it up, goto the BIOS, then save and exit, should be all good.

If you have free slots then just add it so you have more ram.

What your looking for is this type of slots. They are more than often than not towards the middle of a motherboard. You'll have to open the tabs of where your putting the ram to let it in. Push down on the ram and the tabs should close. If its close just push the tabs in the indents to bring it home.

I upgraded early last year from "256mb PC-2100DDR SDRAM" to a "512mb PC-3200DDR" . AMICROE part #AMI512SD-3200. paid around $140 for it. Was bought along with a MSI FX5500 256mb graphics card. Fitted both of them myself. Don't try and use the new ram along side the old one if you have 2 ram slots. I tried that and it was not compatible.

Also my system is pentium 4 2.0Ghz, 80Gb ultra DMA Hdd, cd-rw(stuffed), LG(tm)dvd-cd combo rw also self fitted, front access 2.0 USB ports X2.

Yeah, dont try and use the old ram with the new stuff.

Depending on what motherboard you have you may have two channels for your ram. But the ram ports should be coloured to show you which ones they go in. Sorry if thats confusing.

Plus, if you use slower ram the new fast ram you bought wil only run at the slower speed of the old ram defeating the purpose.
