we used newspaper.
everytime the puppy statrs to urinate, or sniffs around as if it wants to, or even immediately after, we put it on the newspaper we had spread near the door. we then added more paper, on top of the wet stuff, as dogs smell their toilet. every now and again, throw the paper out, but keep just a small piece. ie tear the paper into 1/4 and leave 1/4 with the new paper. the dog will learn that's its toilet. then start decreasing the size of the paper. we got to 1/2 page size, then started putting the paper outside. at the same time, take the puppy out after every meal, and when ever it goes to the toilet outside, pour on heaps of praise. dogs have the instinct to try to please the pack leader (insert your name here). praise when using the paper, praise when going outside, and you will have a toilet trained dog. it takes time, but never punish or get angry, as the dog most certainly will misunderstand, and you will be back to square one. for our last 2 dogs (we have trained 6), when we took them outside, we kept saying a key word, (like "toilet") until they wet. then lots of praise. now those dogs wet on command, we say "toilet" and they go. if you want me to keep ranting, send a pm and I'll go on some more. |

We purchased "Toilet Pads" from Big W. Highly absorbent and all that stuff. Also buy some Attractant from a pet shop... $12.95 for a bottle. 4 drops of that on the Toilet Pads will attract them to do it there. Don't forget the newspaper!!!

Just put out him outside :
1. when he wakes up 2. when he has been inside for a fair while without going wee wee 3. after he eats. They soon get the message. That was what i was taught @ puppy class. |

take him/her to puppy pre-school. They teach the dog all the basics and teach the owner things like this...

I might add that it's really important to socialise your pup so puppy pre-school is great. Also, remember just becasue you have a small dog doesn't mean it doesn't need to be obedience trained. My pet hate (get it :-) ) is owners of maltese and other small fluffy dogs straining at leashes, growling, barking at my dog while I'm out on a walk because "They are soooo cute" negating the need for training. Do everyone in the community a favour and get the little fella trained ASAP.. Barkbusters are a really good bunch of people..emphasis is on training YOU not the dog but it seems to work pretty well IME. |

The worst thing you can do is rub the dogs nose in it after you've just discovered it, the dog may have done it 10 mins before you saw it, but would of forgotten about it. If you punish it then it will associate the punishment with actually going to the toilet, not where it goes.
Dog's naturally want to please their owners, which is why they will go to the toilet and look guilty if the above is done. |

We have 2 Maltese x Lhasa Apso, and they are always well behaved.
You know what annoys me... People seem to always ignore the "Keep your dog on a leash" signs on the beach...
