When we installed Service Pack 2, the whole pc died... managed to uninstall it and everything was fine.
I hate Windows, and have turned OFF all automatic updates. Thanks for the warning!

And yes, it was a brand new comp and we hadn't installed anything, put SP2 on and the whole lot died. Ugh! A$$hole Bill Gates!

I was told a while back by a few in the IT game, that when scanning your comp for updates/installing updates, Microsoft actually install little bugs to slow your comp down amongst other little things. Especially if like me, you are still running 98SE and Microsoft will install things to slow your comp, make it freez, ect.. so you'd get annoyed and update to the latest Microsoft op systems. Don't know how true this is, but Billy is no fool and it would not suprise me if it's true.

I know my PC can run slower after installing updates - the time it takes to boot and general performance deteriorates - even after a clean re-install. But then again Microsoft products are largely about releasing products with heaps of bugs, releasing fixes which reveal more bugs etc.

win98 dont need updates lol most reliably os he ever made, xp aint to bad, its more maintaing vulnerabilities more so than keeping every update going
till only recent i was running xp with only few worm patches and thats it. no viruses nothing come through (im running firewall and antivirus) them updates arent all that necasary, but if u feel safer with them be prepared for a chocked up os.

At home I have XP Pro.
I updated with SP2 and the whole think crashed. Then I was told the SP2 does that. So I re-installed windows and switched off auto updates. Runs quick again now.

The crash was becuase of the windows automatic updates, that downloaded, then installed and requested a reboot.

I just don't take chances anymore, I learnt the hard way.
There was ONE patch I didn't download and install with SP1, my computer ran beautifully, did everything I wanted. That was until some bored little person found my computer and also found that I hadn't installed that last patch and took advantage of it. I lost 3 years worth of emails, pics, documents. My homepage was hijacked, my desktop disappeared (including all the stuff on it). Basically I was : by a hacker because I didn't have 1 last patch.

You say it's untrue. How do you come to this conclusion? Can you prove this not to be the case?

Weird that some people are having problems, I installed them and my system runs just as it did before, but supposably more secure.

i just let the microsoft update site scan my computer for updates and the only one that came up was the sp2 update. No 5 new critical updates to choose from, and I havent updated for around a month now... BTW from what I've been hearing from people on here, I WILL NOT be installing SP2, I'm happy with how my PC functions now :
