Default Fairlane go out with a bang?

After getting stuck behind countless Camry's on the way home last night I had an idea about how Ford could get rid of the last of the Fairlane shells and make a tidy profit (a la XC Cobras)
BF Fairlane shell with the following modifications:
• Engine replaced with 4cyl Fiesta engine and Buick Dynaflow “automatic” (actually just a torque-converter .. no gear changes .. smoooooth)
• Half the size of the fuel tank so that it gives the impression of economy
• Mount the seat runners around the opposite direction so the seat will move all the way forward to the steering column
• Remove all rear vision mirrors (not required)
• Only available in white, silver or maroon .. no trendy colours.

This would be the ultimate Camry competitor. Large enough to make it difficult to park and for others to get around. So underpowered to make it incapable of maintaining normal road speeds. The only thing is that it would need to be debadged … the Ford brand might be a bit too exciting.

.. I hate Camry's ..

Fantastic idea, about 90% of the drivers I battle through each morning would be very excited at the prospect of owning such a beast!

It would need factory tinted windows (for a half-arsed effort at hiding the fact that the driver is on his mobile for most of the trip) and the airbag could be done away with in favour of a make-up mirror.

Oh, and delete the indicators (not required) and is there any way to ensure that the driver won't react to a traffic light going green for at least 10 seconds?

i'd rather they do a limited run of typhoon and GT engined LTD's, big brakes and nice wheels, an incarnation of the BF2 front specific to the luxo barges et al....

that'd work

well they used to build a Fairlane GT model back in the day, bringing it back might breathe some life back into the LWB sales, but I'd say the opportunity is long gone now and would be too little too late.

LOL who doesn't hate camrys...

But honestly Ford have just fallen too far behind with their LWB cars, the Statesman/Caprice has been much better value for money for a few years now.

IMO (and I am probably over-simplifying the problem) - it's all down to the engines.

If they had the original BA Fairlane Ghia (in either 182kw I6 or 220kw V8) and then had a Fairlane T6 (instead of G8) using the 240kw T6 and then had the LTD using the 260kw V8, they would have been much more popular.

Perhaps they could have been more daring with the styling to help make then look different to just a stretched Falcon. But IMO - if they used those engines, it could have gone a long way to saving the model.

Again, I know there are more deeper issues with the models than just that - but I see their engines as their biggest flaw since the BA launch.

Actually, sorry... that might step on the Force 8's toes. How about a Ford Fairlane with the Boss 260 engine.

I picture Camrys as washing machines that have sprouted wheels and an engine.

Designed for those that purely want to get from A to B, not those who are interested more in how they get from A to B.

If they had have made the Force6 and 8 LWB it might have been a good idea, mind you I'd take the assumption that they would have explored this avenue and found that there wouldn't be enough sales to make a profit.

Unfortunatly Holden have an export market for the LWB while Ford SFA. Hopefully they get the account to supply the Middle East so the LWB Falcon will survive.

I'd say the styling was more of a problem than the engines, AU looked awkward & BA was so similar to Falcon because the budget to do anything else did not exist. It's a shame that there has not been some sort of facelift to try and salvage the situation, even using Territory lights would make the car look different from a Falcon and keep the cost down.

How about a Fairlane Ute? LWB, plenty of carrying capacity and luxury to boot (actually, no boot.....)
