Hi All,
I may have the opportunity to get a worn set of S1 Tickford 17 rims. For those of you who know me well, these are the rims I've been wanting for a long, long time. I've just never had the money or proper opportunity; perhaps until now. A work collegue has a set, but two rims have a bit of a buckle in them. Also the clear coat is worn on each rim. Below are the pictures of the worst rim (buckle wise). Clear coat issue is about the same on all 4. There are no tyres on offer. My questions for those in the know. 1. Is it repairable? I expect so but have no prior experience in such matters. 2. How much for the buckle to be taken out if it is repairable? 3. How much for the repolishing and clear coat of these rims? 4. How much for 17 inch rubber? Who recommends what? 5. How much do you think they are worth in this condition? Please peruse the pics below and offer up your advice. Cheers, GK

So that's $220 without the cost of purchasing, repainting and clearcoating, tyres or even purchasing yet! GK

They are repairable, repairers can reroll the rim to remove the buckle, and they will strip and reclear them.
It's not cheap though, i recently had a rim repaired, damage machined out and recleared - $136.50

GK - even if you get those rims for nothing, they will cost you around $1000 to get fixed, and fitted with rubber. For the same price, you should get a package deal from ebay, bob jane etc.
While they are a good rim, the ones I had earlier for $500 were in far better condition (at least they weren't buckled).

My rationale for these rims is that I could probably pick them up really cheap, and get them rolled, then coated and stored in my shed. Then, when more funds become available, I could get the tyres and have them fitted. It really does seem that which ever way I look at it, my goal for these Tickford rims is still a long way off. GK

Sadly GK, wheel repairs don't come cheap, if they're without tyres they'd want to be very cheap to be worth your while. To get decent tyres (eg. Maxxis Z1's are excellent and good value) you're looking at ~$700 for the four. Obviously then you'd have great brand new tyres, but the rims would still looked scuffed up, so I'd factor in $100 each for the 2 non-buckled rims and $200 for the buckled ones, assuming they'd need repolishing and reclearing. There's $1300 without including the initial cost of the rims. Even if you got them for $200 that's $1500 for the set in total. I haven't seen as many lately (on ebay etc), but they will come up, and $700-$800 for those rims with more than 60% rubber I think is reasonable. I'd hold out mate.
edit: JC beat me to it! |

So, how much did Evan offer you his set for?? LOL...
There are a couple of sets on ebay at the moment actually, not sure what the bidding is up to yet though. I actually kerbed one of my rims badly last week on a raised kerb on a new traffic calming scheme being put in near my place - but luckily the scuff is in exactly the same spot as one of the previous owners efforts!! So no 'new' damage, but still kicking myself. I'm going to need at least 2 rims refurbed sometime too, so would be interested to hear what you manage to find out. Cheers! |
