I'm having this really annoying problem with my computer...It will randomly freeze, and the only way to fix it is to reboot it. It happens randomly, with no warning whatsoever. It'll be running fine, then bam, the mouse doesn't move or anything. I haven't been able to test this under any other Operating System besides WinXP, and have reformatted twice, and it still happens. This is leading me to believe that it a hardware fault, because I am lot loading any new software that has worked previously...SO my question is which bit of hardware with a fault would cause this behaviour? There is no warning, and the computer boots fine. It is a Athlon XP 2100+ running at 1733mhz on an Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe, with 1024mb DDR 233 (512+256+256) generic (but different branded...has worked for a few month with no problems in this configuration) RAM, and Seagate Barracuda/Maxtor Diamondmax 9 80GB HDD's, Maxtor Master Seagate Slave...any other specs just ask...
Oh CPU Temp is at a steady 50C. |

Maybe a driver or something. Sometimes happens to me and i suspect its my video card. On other occasions it will just go blank and restart. Rarely happens. Online Crash Analysis says its a device driver but doesnt centre the problem on a particular driver. Before display used to flicker then the computer crashed. Mate reformatted my computer and determined that my burner that i used to install programs (therefore drivers) was corrupting the data somehow and it was known as a common fault with some Benq burners. So now i just use my DVD drive to install stuff. So my guess would be something video related as i had the same problem but could be wrong.

I had a similar problem, and it turned out that my antivirus (PC-Cillin 2002) was causing it. I removed the antivirus software and reinstalled it and now works fine. Don't know if this could be your problme, but might give it a try. Also, your drivers may not have installed correctly for your hardware.
Can you boot up in safe mode atleast?? |

I would have said its a heat issue...but 50C isnt that hot....its not great but not high enough to cause problems...
Try unplugging/uninstalling all hardware except the essentials like videocard...see ifit still locks up.

Your biggest problem is that you are using a piece of Wintel crap.
Get yourself an Apple with OS X and you'll never look back. I'm using a 2001 model iBook that hasn't been rebooted for a month! [les@Focus:~:13:54:08]# uptime 13:54 up 30 days, 19:19, 1 user, load averages: 2.05 1.92 2.12 Mac OS X rocks! - no crashes, no freezes - about the only time you need to reboot is when you do a system software upgrade... |

Whats the big deal about rebooting...that isnt the be all and end all of pcs....
No spyware, no viruses....same on Windows if you run antivirus software.... Anyway, we cold argue about this forever....not in the mood though...:P

Yeah, great...although i'll be buying a powerbook for uni, can we stick to the problem at hand? It seems that the feezes also occur when using Ubuntu 5.01...

Another Mac vs Windows thread, I use both, both have there own merits.
On the freezing issue, I had a similar problem and told to test my ram, so I would do that, for me it turned out to be a issue with hyper-threading and my tv tuner. |

Checked the memory yet? That's what I reckon it is too. I've experienced them before.

Check your PSU voltages, particularly the 12 Volt rail. see if you have a pretty steady 12 Volts. Download motherboard monitor (search on google) and check all ur voltages using that.
another thing, open your computer and get some of that air in a tin and clean dust off your RAM and other components. I know my old computer would suddenly have issues, pull it apart, clean the dust off and off it goes again. it's amazing what problems dust can cause. Also tell me the specs of your PSU and how many components you are running. What is yoru video card? Paul P.S, is that overclocked? not sure what an AMD 2100 runs at standard. obviously first to check would be the ram as stated previously, but also take note of exactly what you are doing each time the comp crashes - you might find out if a certain program is causing the crash. also do a hard disk scan, possibly some sectors or allocation units might be faulty or corrupt and when you try to acces the files on that part of the drive it can also cause the crash.
Also because it is an AMD and they tend to run hot, check if there is adequate ventilation from the case. My computer will sometimes re-boot, when it gets hot and it is actually the over temperature protection turning off the system to prevent damage to the CPU.

Selekta, my computer freezes since I installed Mozilla. I've got to be careful, when browsing on Mozilla, and using the mouse-wheel to scroll - the mousewheel causes the whole system to freeze... I've updated the mouse drivers, tried for Mozilla updates, problem not solved! I can't make Internet Explorer create the same fault.
PS.... Mouse is a Labtec optical mouse. |

I had that problem, random lockups, couldn't work out what it was. I took the computer to get checked and my capactors were leaking and that what was causing the prob. The tech showed me a few motherboards having similar issues and they were all the same. As you said maybe a hardware issue, I'd be getting you motherboard checked.
