I had someone do this to me a few weeks back when i was in the focus. At night, right on my tail. I moved to the next lane, let them overtake and then adjusted my headlights with the flick of a switch. Focus can do this. Which is a great little thing to have. I just adjusted the lights so they sat higher on the road, got a safe distance back to where the heaghlights were coming of his review mirror and kept the same distance behind him. I was tempted to throw the high beams on but thought I had done enough to annoy the driver.

Well when I was on my P's (young and foolish etc etc) if someone was up my bum I would tap the brakes. If that didn't work, and I knew they were being bastards, I would slow down so they pass me, then speed up and do the same back to them so they know what it feels like.

I do the same now, but without the speeding up bit..LOL

That all depends on what i'm driving. I react differently if i'm driving one of my utes or the EB than when i'm driving my XR6T.

I've had the odd occasion where someone has given me the highbeams from behind when I'm in the BA.
I let them pass them show them how bright my highbeams are

My old van I used give the rear fog light a quick flash. Then resort to the flood light above the tailgate.

I've got the mother of all towbars on the back of my falcon, so I just give the brakes a hard jab, and then get straight back on the accelerator... If they run up of me, it's their fault, and it's more than like gonna do a lot more damage to them than me...

If I'm in a good mood, I'll just slow right down and not let them pass me...

If its a real idiot such as a P plater or some knob in a commodore, I like to move over and let them pass, then when they overtake I just slowly speed up with them untill they are right behind the next car. Then I just sit with them blocking them in whilst they are tailgating the car in front of them, leaving a gap a little smaller than their car width.

I pretend not to notice them continuously checking the gap to see if they will fit.

Normally, I will tap the brakes or slow down without tapping the brakes until at least 10k under, then tap the brakes. In the cases where this happens, it usually works and they either stay away or change lanes.

Its amazing how polite some drivers can be when they realise what 50kg of steel bumper bar could do to a plastic front.

some of the replies in this thread are borderline on stupidity yourselves.....

speeding up when they're overtaking so they cant get in, do you realise how dangerous that is? wanting to cause a head on accident or something?
slamming on the brakes to cause an accident "because you have a large towbar so it wont damage your car"... bravo

fair enough they're doing the wrong thing by tail gating, but you dont need to add to their stupidity by adding a seccondary dangerous situation...

I REFUSE to get out of their way. Tapping the brakes then slowing down if that didnt work, only works some of time. I never do under the speed limit so they can bugger off!
Someone has got to come up with a real way to deal with this. (Hanging the bum out the window sounds good)
Even slowing down to this idiot recently only made him see just how close he could get without actually touching :jab: which gave his girlfriend in the passenger seat a laughing attack.
I've tried the slowing down then speeding up when they try to pass and that has turned out to be a case of severe road rage in the past, but at least I really annoyed the crap out of him. If I was driving a heap of crap that would make it easier, something with a big roo bar and a steel bar across the back.

Where is the option that says "Keep left out of the way" before this happens ?

Retaliation implies doing something wrong to counteract something wrong.

just let them pass and have an accident with someone else, I don't need or want the inconvience of being without my car whilst it is repaired even if i would not be at fault.
Having said that a friend of mine used to have a a "reversing light" it was a 100 watt spot light operated by a switch at the rear of his car, a quick flick with that usually made them back off pretty quick especially at night.

I just lift my foot off the go pedal so its about 5 k's under the limit. If they abuse me when they fly past I just give them the bird.

That can't always apply. I'll use the freeway as an example. Many times when I'm on the freeway, I move to the right to overtake and I get an idiot come flying up behind me and then expects that because I'm in the right lane, I should speed up over the limit to get myself back into the left. If I can't safely get back to the left (which is usually where I am. I'm not a right lane hogger at all) then I'll sit in the right at the speed limit and if a fool wants to sit up my rear then I'll tap the brakes. No way am I going to speed up just to get out of that person's way. And no way will I move to the left unsafely if it means that I'll end up being right on someone's rear just because I've been made to move back over quickly! It's 100k's on the freeway. Instead of them rushing up to sit on your a$$, they should be at the speed limit themselves.

So the "keep left out of the way" can't always happen. People do overtake. You do get caught in the right lane and just because of that, it doesn't mean people have a right to intimidate you and make you feel like you have to speed up in order to get back to the left. I tap brakes! And many times, it slows them down. Simple.

Couldn't vote because the option 'Lift your foot and let them get a bit more ****ed off that you can't be forced into driving at thier speed'.

The chances are I'd be on, or slightly over, the speed limit, which means they are usually well over, or want to be. I'm the biggest *** hole out there, bar none, and will do whatever I can to upset *******.

This happens all the time when i am in the truck. It's their fault if they rear end you
so i just carry on doing my thing. I ignore them and get on the left lane if i have the option.

I got chrome bumpers on the VC so im not afraid of a nudge. My mate use to have a Vailaint Regal and a guy for no reason we know of looked like he was on drugs threw a glass bottle out the window came in the car and hit the side of my face. My mate and his chrome bumpers decided to nudge this guy 200sx a few times. That fixed him

if they are right up behind me and dont back off for a while ill back down to around km/h if im in town and make them sit behind me because they cant pass me. Works great and they dont do it again when you get bck to 50. If im out on the highway ill just tap the breaks or slow down so they pass me. Have any other L platers noticed that even if your sittin on 105 110km/h everyone wants to pass you?

I wash the windscreen and let them have some water and my windscreen dirt. They get the message or a quick tap on the brakes will also wake them up.

In my ute, a brake test is in order.

In the XR8, slow down to about half the speed limit, when they go to overtake me, plant me foot to the limit again, and repeat.

If they get agressive, a small "talking to" at the next set of lights may be in order.

Hyperthetically ofcourse.

Brake testing the wrong person can end in tears, two wrongs don't make a right.
Personally i ignore them until there is room to move over.

Yep. Happens all the time. I feel as if some people see the L plates and immediatly wants to pass me even though I am at the speed limit. :

BTW, a mate also told me when you are being tailgated that you should use the handbrake instead of the pedal :
