Is forklift steering legal?

I dont understand why this would not be if you are driving very slow. I can understand if you are driving fast.

This is one handed steering using your palm to steer.

At first I thought you meant forklift steering as in rear wheel steering..till I read the last line. You'll find people call that 'palming the wheel.'

Now, it is not 'ILLEGAL', as in you won't spend time in a court and jailhouse over it; however it is against the rules and regulations of your local driving institution.

In NSW, the learner logbook clearly states using either "hand-over-hand steering or push-pull steering." To be fair though, in the very first week that I started learning I found myself palming the wheel to do three point turns and to reverse park, although that was about as long as it lasted. You should NOT get into this habit at all as you won't pass your driving test if you do and it promotes a lazy driving behaviour.

Is it bad for the car in any way? Like turning the wheel faster than it can handle?

Unless the car is Russian, I'm sure whoever made your steering box engineered it to cope with rigours of palming. I had an old corolla burnout car and I put one of those forklift knobs on the steering wheel.

i do that type of steering when i drive a truck, but not when i drive a normal car cauz i just think its not worth it if my hand slips and then i go crashing cauz i was too lazy lol

Legally you require both hands on the steering wheel. The only exceptions are those with certain medical conditions in which case a spinner knob is required for single hand operation.

I had an accident last year that tore the ligaments in my wrist. Workcover paid for a 'spinner knob' for me to use so that I could drive single handed.

I also, however, had to undergo an assessment, where I was evaluated on my ability to drive like this, so the Transport Department were happy (i.e. I wasn't going to cause accidents by driving with a spinner knob)

mm I always palm 1 hand 99% of the time.. not because its 'fully ***' but because I just cbf steering... life isn't easy is it.

after ur test however........ PALMS AWAY!!!!!! :p

seriously tho, ( i got mu licence in WA) any method of steering that is not the push pull that most bodies require is frowned on, to the point that if u cross ur hands on the wheel (hand-over-hand) will lead to a failure for that test.

Dont know how it works these days, but when i first started driving in the ninties, you needed a specific condition on your licence to be able to use a steering handle like this.

If anyone has an old SA licence look on the back of it for all the licence classes. L, P, truck etc... then the steering handle was listed on there seperately.

Assume it was used as an option for the disabled??
