A couple of days ago the volume and seek buttons on my steering wheel stopped working (the cruise control buttons may or may not work, i have never used it). I had a quick look through the book for what fuse it could be and if it said what to do but I couldnt find anything.
Anyone know why it stopped working and how to fix the problem? Cheers |

It is more than likely the "clock spring", which has nothing to do with a clock, and is actually a long, wound-up ribbon cable, not a spring.

my money is on JC!
JC is always 100% spot on. It is the clock spring. Consider yourself lucky that the horn didn't continously come on while driving or while turning. As this is common when the clockspring goes, as the ribbon cable ends up being teared apart and wires touching. My horn was continuosly on while driving thru peak hr traffic, everyone thought i was going nuts, till i lifted up the bonnet and pulled the horn relay. from experience the clock spring sells for about $40-50 from wreckers. |

if you are going to do this yourself, as bestrafe stated, you will need to disconnect battery and pull off the airbag. You will need the torq bits to remove the torq security scew.
Then remove the steering wheel. You might need a steering wheel puller or some good strong hammer technique from behind the steeringwheel. take off the clockspring and wiring harness. Then re-install clockspring, making sure to recentre the clockspring. |
