Default Import Costs

Did post this on another thread thought i may have more luck here,I am looking at importing a '69 Mach 1 from the States to do a ground up restore, hopefully i can get one complete (all running gear). Just wondering if anyone knows the expenses incured in importing, i realise that will be the cheapest part but with not having imported before i dont know exactly what i am up against,i.e costs, red tape etc.
Any info would be appreciated.

I can't recall exact figures, I have seen the topic discussed before on other forums but do your homework thoroughly before you commit to buying a car o/s. There is the freight to consider, also import duties and GST. And also currency exchange rates. As a very rough guide say you find a car for US$5K it will probably cost you at least another AU$5K to get it here with all the charges, maybe more. Have a look in magazines such as Unique Cars for businesses that source cars and arrange all this stuff for you (at a price of course!). Find out how much a complete restored driveaway regod RHD car is going for in Aust first and work out if it's going to be cost effective to go through the hassle of importation and restoration.

If you haven't done it before, you're best off going through a company that will do it all for you.
Russell at Just Mustangs has been importing cars for years.

You could try talking to one of the many international logistics companies. Going by the sounds of it you will have what they call an LCL shipment (Less than a Container Load). When I was importing stuff from the states I used to use Hellmann Worldwide or Mainfreight. Both of these companies are in the phone book and can give you quotes on getting your shipment to Aus.
