How to remove old window tint

anyone know how to rewmove old window tint?

is it illegial if the tint is wavey, as they sometimes go, and distorts the vision throught side or back windows?

The easiest way to remove tint is with a razor blade, lots of patience and Windex...
I was told a while ago that if tint distorts vision then yes it is illegal. If you have an accident even though it might not be entirely your fault, you could end up in trouble due to having defective tint (same as bald tyres scenario).

If you don't want to remove the tint yourself, there are places that do it but charge a bit.

I was told that amonia gets it off, but I encourage you to check first - I don't know how correct this is!

The easiest way and this is what I did. I paid someone.
I rarely pay for something I can do myself, but the glue is a pain to get off.

I've only done one door window years ago, but I used a hair dryer to soften it while using a small paint type scraper to start it off and then I think it just pulled off as I kept the hair dryer on it. Any residual glue is best removed with eucalyptus oil.

Is it as hard as it looks. Looks like it could get messy.

I used a blade on all of my windows - but the tint was really really bad and you couldn't see through the rear window.

Consider if you want new tint. I'm sure if you want the tint replaced, they will take off the old stuff free-of-charge.

Off memory I think I gave him an extra $50 to do it. Saves cleaning the mess, etc.

I was wondering this myself for my other Ford. Then this thread pops up... But for $50 bucks extra, I sounds easier to pay someone else too.

You can pay between $200 to $350 for tinting.

You really have to look around to get the best price

As said above in the thread if you are having trouble getting the glue off use the eucalyptus oil, it is the best thing to remove glue from any surface

heatgun or hairdryer to soften the glue, plastic scraping tool to get it started and you should just about be able to peel it off.

soft solvent for the residual adhesive, citrus or eucalyptus based i guess.

take care when removing window tint with a scraper from a Rear Winscreen when a there is a heater element involved !

Some elements are on the internal side of the glass and scraping across it can render it useless

I used a hair dryer and blade on the side windows in my project car, but the rear window is best done by a professional.

It stinks, and it's time consuming. I found taking the windows out of the car and laying them on a towel on a table made it easier.

My tint cost $320 and this included taking the old stuff off. ($280 standard charge) Its not worth doing it yourself!!!!! Its a long horrible job if you havnt the right stuff and technique to do it. Its not illegal to have bad tint.....just looks bad!!!!

a strong ammonia based window cleaner , citric based cleaner or eucalyptus oil should remove the residule glue from the glass but you will need to get the plastic / polyester film off first.

if the film has gone rippley and not bubbled then you might be in luck and be able to lift an edge with a new razor blade and be able to peel the film off. if the glue has dried out and the film is bubbling away from the glass it can be a lot harder to get off.

with 9 years in the business i have found that the best approch for removal varies for different kinds of tint and for different stages of failure and also depends on the type of car involved .

it can be a barstard of a job . can take an hour or all day and you dont know till you start what it will be like. can almost fall off one window and have to be chipped off the next one with a razor.

some films will come off when the glass is heated and some heat makes no difference.

i used to charge a fixed fee of $50 for removal but it was more like comunity service than a paid job because at an hourly rate the cost would be too high for most people and i would pick up a lot of retint jobs by doing it.

it is illegal to have any thing on your windows that obscures your vision and you can be defected. not to mention it being very dangerous if you cant see out the windows.

done a few! if they want a extra 50 give it to them with your blessing because you would make more money on your hourly rate than the time it takes to do it for 50 bucks

Ive done a few cars and always use steam

Steam it up for a bit then the tint usually almost falls off, works a treat. Tidy up afterwards where required with some eucalyptus oil or solvent
