When Painting the RockerCover , Do you Need a New Gasket ?

When Painting the Brake Calipers , Has Anyone Noticed that even with Extensive Cleaning and Degreasing , VHT Caliper Paint is Chipping Off ?

Has Anyone Fitted a BF Airbox Lid to their Car ?

Not that i am aware of. I took mine off, sprayed it, put it back. I haven't had any troubles so far.

I didnt even degrease mine and theres not even an ounce of paint coming off. Get yourself a wire wheel attachment for a drill and it brings them up like new then paint

Yeah mine are like that too, although it's only the fronts. My theory is that the temperature they were painted was to cold(trust me, fronts were painted on a cold night). My rears which were painted during the day(warmer) has had no such chipping.

my brake calipers on my AU are fine and they have been painted for almost 2 and a half years now without an issue.

I fitted a BA Air Box to my AU, but had to modify the lower section to fit the engine bay shape. ( grinder or file works well )

I thought the rocker cover was a reusable item! I could be wrong though.

Tell us about the preparation of the calipers Daniel.

Did you put a wire brush on them? Perhaps the degreaser wasn't properly washed of the calipers before painting?

oh, forgot to add, the bonnet used to hit the airbox, before i filed it down to fit.. not much room under there though.

oh and for calipers, de grease, clean as much crap off them as you can then prepsol, THEN paint.

If you mean the rocker cover George, then i just washed it with soap and water then sprayed a single coat of black. It looks like poo, it needs another coat, but it was a pain to remove so i haven't been bothered yet!

No - the gasket is a reusable one. E series and prior need to replace the cork gasket, but most good places will replace it with the AU one, as it is reusable.

for what its worth just replace the gasket while ya got the rocker cover off, but if you really need to re-use it then check that atleast its still soft and flexible and in good condition, ie: no cuts or over tightened bits!

as for the calipers, all ive ever done is spray em with brake cleaner, scrub em down, rinse off, allow to dry, prepsol with rag and spray!
it just might of had something to do with the ambient temp you did them in, just wire brush em down as best you can and re-do them!!

i dont want them to do it for me , i can do it myself , just wanting to know why the Paint flaked off , when i did it all the proper way ....;(

Did you shake the can up properly? I'm clutching at straws here Daniel, not intending to insult your intelligence.

Perhaps it is to do with the temp on the day you painted? I painted mine on a really hot day last week and so far they are fine.

I Cleanded them with Sandpaper , Prepsol and Brake and Caliper Cleaner and they still flaked off ,

Repsray is on the Cards

did u let the paint dry before u drove it anywhere and used the brakes?
i rekon its heated up while still wet and slightly cracked, then led to flaking.

I'd say that there is your problem. You should have done it this way:
Sandpaper
Brake and Caliper Cleaner
Prepsol
Paint

The Prepsol gets rid of any greasey/waxy/dirt residue, but then it appears you have sprayed brake cleaner over the top of your nicely prepsol'd callipers, making them greasy again, and the paint hasn't stuck.

The method I use is:

Wire brush
Rub with prepsol on a cloth
Wipe off clean & dry
Paint
When paint is touch dry, put callipers back together on the car, replace wheels and take the car for a good drive heating the brakes up - this will bake the paint on - it will never crack or fall off.

And I only ever use the Export stuff from bunnings/supercheap at $3 per can! Sometimes I use leftover Holts duplicolour, but I have never used the VHT or other brand specialty brake paint - it is a rip off as the calipers never get hot enough to need 1500 degree protection - and if they do, you have more to worry about than your paint flaking.

The rocker cover gasket is reusable, just leave it on the cover while you spray it and this will eliminate chances of it not sealing properly. the Gregory's does sayto replace it, but it's really not necessary unless it has gone flat or worse. Just bolt it back on + your throttle inlet pipe and plugs then run the engine for a few minutes. if it starts leaking it might need tightening or replace the gasket. Use Degreaser to clean the cover inbetween sanding it back.

In regards to the calipers, Can you just use engine enamel? or will it not cure properly?

you dont have to grind away... i found by just doing up the bolt at the bottom nearest the headlight it will hold but dont do the 2 top bolts up and the bonnet will close fine. check my workshop build thingy it pretty much fits perfectly except the top bolts
