Thumbs down Ve Ss-v

Has anyone had a go in one of these yet?

I took one for a spin Saturday (6spd Manual).
I didn't want to but the salesman (my cricket coach) just gave me the keys. He sells them but does not love them or any car. :

I was not overly impressed, but that may be biased if you look at my driveway.

The interior of the Ignition (orange) SS-V was 'different' : - very Fast & Furious.

I did not think it pulled much harder than my BA XR8 Auto, and the steering & handling was practically identical.

When I returned and parked it near mine the Ignition colour was identical to my Mandarine

Is the new SS just a copy of the BA?

Yer mate, i went for a spin in a VE the other day and they aint seem much different to the BA at all. Personaly if i had the money to afford a VE i would buy a BA then do it up with all the spare money.

wow very surprising thread . i haven't had the luxury of being able to drive one, i must say after reading media figures on how much harder they go and how superior they are over a ford i must say i'm surprised , but also if it is like driving a BA XR8 . IS THAT SUCH A BAD THING .

pffft a standard BA / BF XR8 has nothing on the VE, i drove both before we bought the VE 6.0L Calais and the Calais definately made the XR8 feel like a truck, im not biased either as Im Ford blooded and have been since the day I was born. Ford win in the sixes department but the general knows how to tune a V8, id never buy a V8 Ford/FPV over the Holden, they just dont have that out of the box power that the Holden does, the only thing that probarly came close was the T series as the car was very dynamic, it didnt have a huge amount of power but it didnt need it, for what ford gained in power with the BA they lost in weight / dynamics.

Don't forget that the test cars have done very few kilometers and may feel a little tight.

I took a mates VE clubsport for a spin a few weeks ago. it was a 6ltr and 5spd auto. as for power i think my GT-P would whip it. but when it came to handling the VE won hands down. it was so sure footed at high and low speeds and just felt like a light weight car not a heavy commodore.

i've only come across threads with you in them a few times but 9/10 times i would have thought you would be a holden person. you seem to be pretty much against ford for everything. i don't find it hard to believe that someone could feel not much difference between the xr8 and ss. they both have similar power and both weigh pretty much the same. what makes the xr8 feel like a truck?

i remember reading an article comparing a vy ss ute and a ba xr8 ute and the xr8 pretty much out did the ss in every department. their excuse was they have deffinantly felt more powerful gen 3s. why would holden send a sick car? it's so obvious the ford had more go.

everytime a ford does bad, theres no excuses but when a holden does bad its always some excuse. lets face it, not every holden can be tampered with and people who go out and test the cars will realise that. what about the gto that did 0-100 in less then 5 secs?. there has never been a repeat.

Well, I think Ford have "some" catching up to do and a little overtaking too but that will come with the Orion (hopefully ;)) Apart from being sluggish off the line, I have been pretty happy with the VE 6's I have driven and was pretty happy with the GT level pegging a Clubby one day.

I'm keen to drive an SS and see for myself.

Lol fair enough, im a holden guy posing as a Ford driver.. Dont think so...

The thing that I hated about the XR8 the most was the the front weight of the car (as per my truck like description), the car felt very heavy in the front end and really made the rest of the package dissapointing (as per my AU comments above). As for power the Ford had enough go to keep anyone happy but at the end of the day it wasn't as smooth or as torquey as the 6.0L. So straight line performance isnt the key issue here, its more of a dynamics thing that Ford are lacking with the big V8s, which ofcourse has been reflected in 9/10 reviews to date.

Its hard to park a 4 year old car next to a brand new model and NOT think the newer one is better, thats just a part of life. The XR6 Turbo and Typhoon on the other hand are a different story and Id still buy either without thinking twice before id buy a V6 Holden.

Maybe he likes to try different things? Why buy a car based on the badge?

Obviously he thought the VE was for him hence why he bought it. I say good on them.

The VE commodore both power and performance wise on paper to date from various media has indicated better figures than their respective falcon competiton.

That said, whether Holden's quality control can successfully manage to keep this standard in day to day production is anyones guess.

The SS-V might not 'FEEL' any different to a XR8 but it'll rip the doors off it down the 1/4 mile!

I can attest to that but only up to 80km/h as my bro-in-law tried to take one on in mine at a traffic light duel. Mine sounded better though _2:

Last time i checked there weren't any 1/4 mile drag stips on our roads, and the maximim posted speed limit around town in 100 kph, and 110 kph on some highways.
With respect to their manufactured propose as road registered passenger vehicles as used on our roads they're probably very similar.
Driving impressions are more important that numbers on paper...

I'm happy with mine too. Hopping into the alternatives after driving the VE for a while, just reinforces the choice. The 6.0 mated to the 6L80E tranny is a nice combo, although I must admit I haven't used the tronic function much

It's not how fast you can go, but how quickly you can get to the posted speed limit.

Or how quickly (safely) you can overtake that B-double.

I think they look great. The initial shots of it in white at Lang Lang before it was released made it look shocking. I've since seen a few on the roads and I'm sorry to say they make the BA XRs look dated.

A bloke where I used to work drove his mates brand spanking new SS-V. He told me that he reckons it would spank an XR8 but would only be slightly faster than a 6 speed auto XR6T.

I worked at a Ford dealer so the guy had driven the whole BA/BF range. He is also not biased to any manufacturer so he had no reason to be biased. He also said the handling was absolutely fantastic. I'd be keen to take one for a spin...

I took one for a spin when they were first released. Best C'dore ever by far. Nice ride and good feel about it. Not as fast as I was expecting from the media reports. But still a c'dore in design, and I don't like that. ie layout and seating in car controls and feel of controls. However tat might just be my tatse as not everyone will rave about aspects of the falcons. I did like that you only have to tap the indicator stalk and it repeats three times ala VW/Audi. I thought the interior was disappointing regard luxury feel compared to ford (SSV) but then again a lot of fruit on it esp as SSV. I thought is was good value and understand why they are selling so well. Plus twin turbo kit available, yum! However I still think they look rediculous!!! SS beter and also dependant on colour. All in all a good car but not for me.

Another thing they have is u can quickly flick the ignition and sit back and the car starts itself

The 6speed BFXR8 runs high 13's too... Close enough to mean a slight snooze at the lights would hand victory to the other car in either situation.
Worst case? 0.4 of a second at 100kph is less than 2 car lengths too, so if it was 0.4 of a second quicker over the 1/4 it would only translate to about 1 to 2 car lengths at best at the legal speed of 100kph... Hardly a flogging in any case.
