Just found this thread and one car jumped into my mind straight off the bat. Eunos 30x. There are a few around that will meet your wish list, they are pretty quick, handle well, have a good interior, usually have sunroof and elec windows, use bugger all fuel, are a V6 and look pretty good too.
Here's a pic of one with 135k's, Sunroof, good paint (but it's auto) and is $6000 neg. I'm sure it could be bought for $5k. There are a few more on there which could be bought for $5k too. Eunos from Carsales I'd also agree with Mitchay, TX5 Ghia is a whole lot of car for under $5k too, particularly with the 2.5 V6. |

N14 Pulsar SSS or Ti. With the SR20 and all the mod cons. It was either one of these or a XR6 for me. They are very quick for what you get and the engines are bulletproof and dont look to bad too!

1980s BMW 325i. Bullet proof engine/drivetrain combo, despite what people on here say who probably haven't owned one. Easy to fix, plenty of parts. Only problem would be no LSD and a bit too small, for my liking anyway.

Steer clear of the Ford/Mazda FWD V6s ... nothing but nightmares to fix if something goes ... like headgaskets ... fun ... CVs are fun as well.
The Laser TX3 from the early 90s was a good little vehicle ... even if you get the GHIA model with the 1.8L SOHC engine ... but the pick would be the 1.8L DOHC engine though ... not overly powerful ... but they are reliable and fun to drive with a few mods ... also cheap to run. Pulsars N14 and N15 ... with SR20 engine ... would be my main pick though ... getting a decent one for the price you are after though might be difficult. Guy at work had an N14 Ti (luxury model) ... with suspension and engine mods ... looked pretty stock ... and went well ... great car. He sold it to a mate cheap with over 400,000km on the original engine and manual ... no leaks.

I thought about getting a 2L Escort about 5 years ago when looking for a second car, But I realised I could get an N13 Pulsar SSS for the same money. Imagine by the time you ad: LSD, 4 wheel disks, 5 speed box, air con, fuel injection, coil spring rear end, sports dash, etc, etc, to an Escort how much you would be up for.

best reliable cheaper car would have to be an early 90s Subaru liberty these things can do 300,000kms+ with no problems and still feel tight.
