I know, I know, but I reckon just about everyone here has driven a Hilux at least once...
I've just bought an '81 Toyota Stout (basically a beefier Hilux), and it appears that first and second gears in it (it's a column 4 speed) are only good for climbing trees... Top speed in first would be literally 8-10kph... Does this sound right? cheers, Nick

Exactly right - by the time the clutch is out, it's time for another gear. Works well for me, because i consistantly forget i'm driving a manual, and take off in whatever gear i happened to stop in. Haven't taken it to 110kph yet... Hopefully it'll get there without throwing a rod out of that poor little 2 litre 4-banger...
Not sure if it's an import or not... Just liked the look of it (who am I kidding... I liked the price), it drove OK, so I bought it. No one can find ANY info on the Stout on the net, so I'm going by what Vince the Used Car Salesman (tm) told me - It's a beefier Hilux with a bigger payload, heavy duty springs etc.

$2600 with 6 mths rego + warranty, 145,000k's on the clock, Toyota Dealer servicing from new (!!), Gem reco motor (must be all that dealer servicing), NO rust or dents, tank-**** bullbar with spotties... Not an absolute bargain, but I'm happy with it. Beats pushing the Green Machine to work.

those era lux's are geared pretty low yes, so what your saying sounds about right, they will do about 120kph max, thats redlining it tho
