Default Testing for noise, no drivebelt...?

Hey again all,

I have recently noticed a high pitched whiring noise from my engine. I cant quite locate it, it seems to be comming from the drivers side somewhere near the top. I cant do better than that. So i have a suspicion it is the powersteering pump but cant say confidently that it is the culprit (also read a thread where alternator made similar noise (as similar as one whirring noise is to another )).

So what i want to know is can i run my car (idle) for a while without the accesories belt (serpentine/drive belt whatever takes ure fancy ) providing i dont let the car get too hot this should be all good yeah?

This is what i did for the VN powersteering pump (yes i had a VN py: )
run with belt off, make sure the noise isnt from the engine, then play with the accesories and see which one is crunchy when spun or whirs.

And i have tried the screwdriver, stethoscope trick already no help :(

Any input appreciated,
Simo.

yeah you can get away with it, just not for long...even if you take the belt off and give things a spin by hand and have a listen

Cheers bodes-sh,

sounds like a game to play tommorrow arvo then .

Any guesses on a price for powersteering pumps or alternators should they prove to be faulty? I haven't scoped around for them yet anyways...

Thanks,
Simo.

power steering pumps can be rebuilt / exchanged quite easily. alternators can probably be exchanged thru an auto elec, or new they aren't too expensive...

if anything i'd be thinking that sound is coming from the top or bottom tensioner pulley.
